Christmas

Are outside lights naff or not

I have an annual battle with DH about this. I want to put (white) lights in the tree on our drive, he refuses. This year I thought I would order this reindeer and the smaller one as well and put them on our drive. Requires no effort. But he still says its naff. So who is right?

Does it matter if they are naff - if you like them? Personally I am eternally grateful each December that the people on the corner of our road put out lit up reindeer as it helps me find the turning in the dark Grin.
I like lights in trees, helps me feel cheery when it's wet outside.

I like a string of lights but not the whole place lit up like National Lampoon. There's a house near us that overdoes it every year - Reindeer, Santa, Snowmen, Sleighs, things hanging from every tree, parcels, trees, musical things and lights all over the house. Every year there are nearly accidents outside their house as people go past and do a 'wtf' stop.

My DH told me my plans for Halloween were naff. The neighbours would think we were twats, it was nonsense and a waste of money. Blah blah blah.

I did it all anyway, and in the end he loved it, and was making suggestions himself. He even got compliments from some of his colleagues when he went into work on the Monday...they had been out trick or treating with their DC's and were really impressed.

He is saying the same about lights outside for Christmas, but I am ignoring him. I want icicle lights along the eaves (I have wanted those since I was a child, and I can finally afford them) and something in the garden...perhaps a reindeer like you linked to.

So what if its naff? If it makes you happy just do it.

LittleMissGreen - That's exactly what I think - lights in trees cheer me up - as long as they are arranged nicely - badly arranged ones make my teeth itch like those on my neighbours house on the corner

I've got £95 worth of JL vouchers so one of them would be "free" and the other one we would have to pay for. I'm going to put my foot down and get the DCs to guilt him into agreeing...

I hope this won't out my location but today I almost crashed the car as I drove past something, it was a HUGE wreath - green, looked like a sort of circular hedge and I didn't even get a proper look. It was stuck on the front of someone's house.

No blooming idea what that's all about! House sized wreaths! [santa]

I think they are more for kids and the young at heart anyway, as long as you don't go crazy they look very festive and cheer up the dark winter evenings for people who are travelling somewhere.

Here you go. It was this size - or bigger, I can't be sure!

White lights draped in trees - lovely. Quite a few people I know have them up permanently, turn them on for Christmas and other special occasions.

Anything that flashes multi colours, hmmm....

They are naff, but a lot of Xmas is naff. Embrace it if you like it, swerve it if you don't.

Having said, we used to go for a drive round the local housing estates in search of spectacular Christmas displays, and drop money in the collecting boxes outside the more extravagantly bonkers ones, when the children were small.

I tend to disregard the opinion of anyone who states "it's naff" as if it is fact rather than just personal opinion.

I have lights around the outside of my house.
They are purple and blue.
I love them and that is all that matters :)

When I was in my teens we lived in a cul de sac where 2 neighbours competed against each other in a Christmas light-off every year! The competition was rather fierce and scary

The first couple of Christmases it was a novelty but it soon became something which gave us 'the fear' from August onwards. The blink blink of those fairy lights was enough to drive even the sanest person to commit the ultimate sin and decapitate the 5 foot high plastic nativity scene complete with camel and real hay bales.

We have lights around our window and porch and little fairy lights in the path leading up to our door, I love coming home to the house lit up.

Go for it!

We put lights up outside, I love it and the dc love light spotting when we're out. Everywhere looks so much nicer and gives me Christmas cheer.

Not very keen on flashing ones though, they can be a bit annoying for anyone who lives in the vicinity.

Someone cut my parents wire one year, the flashing probably drove them mad.

They are a bit naff.

But I choose to decorate in a way that makes me happy rather than have my decorations dictated to me. Live and let live.

DeirdreDoo that's exactly the sort of thing the house I'm talking about would have. Squashed in between illuminated sleighs, chimneys, snowmen, twirling things, reindeer, etc., etc.

Isn't defying the darkness the point of all the old midwinter festivals - tell him you are fulfilling an ancient spiritual need. Then get several of the reindeer - they are herd animals, aren't they?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 26/11/2015 22:39

I love them. We have a set of slowly twinkling multicoloured ones that I wind through the hedge alongside our drive, I live them.
