PlayStation vs Xbox

We are getting a games console for Christmas and don't know if a PlayStation or Xbox would be better. The next dilemma would then be whether to go for a newer or older model I.e PS3 or PS4/ Xbox 360 or Xbox one.

It's mainly for my DS who is 7 going on 8 but he has 3 younger brothers who will get a look in eventually. He wants to play mine craft, terraria and Lego dimensions. We currently have a Wii that was handed down and while it is great, lots of games he wants are not available for it.

So can anyone in the know tell me should we be going down the PlayStation or Xbox route? And if we should get the older or newer model. He'll not be playing with his friends currently but i'm sure he will in time. I know a few of his friends have Xbox 360s but I'm not sure if they'll be upgrading soon.

I'm getting DS an XBox one. We weren't sure whether to get that or the PS4, but his friends have an XBox so he can play online with them.

The XBox 360 is being phased out, so some games may not be available on that, but it does mean that 360 games will become cheaper.

If it's the older games he's interested in at the moment, would it be an idea to get him a 2nd hand XBox 360, then his brothers will be able to play when they're older. Then when DS is older, he can upgrade?

Got ds(9) an Xbox One for his birthday. He loves it! Seems to be the most popular console with him and his friends. I think there's a better selection of games as well.

Thanks both, Xbox's certainly seem to be more popular in the age bracket of DS, hoping there'll be some good back Friday deals. I'm leaning towards getting the Xbox one as we don't want the same situation as we have with the wii- new games no longer being made.
