Hot chocolate - why the fuss?

on Xmas threads people wax lyrical about hot chocolate like its a magical elixir of the gods.
Why?
It's available 365 days of the year, it's 55p for a kids hot choc in Costa, it's just a drink!
But in mumsnet land there is much talk of hot chocing, how hot choc on Xmas eve is a must, hot choc sachets in stockings etc

Am I the only one whose dcs are not enthralled by a hot drink they can have any day of the year?

Naw can't see the mystique either. We must be cynical grumps or summat.

We don't add marshmallows etc the rest of the year, unless at ,Costa.

But then we never did new pyjamas, Xmas eve box and all that either.

Mine are not Allowed hot chocolate every day ofvthe week. It's a treat for them in the same way as a chocolate bar is.

It's also a cheap stocking filler

And whereas during the rest of the year they might get the odd sachet of cadburys at Xmas they might get a tub of their favourite flavour whittards.

Well I'm guessing you'd prefer mouldy cheese?

I like hot chocolate (with marshmallows) in front of our wood burner on Christmas Eve with the lights twinkling away on our Christmas tree.

That pale brown froth that cost 55p in Costa isn't hot chocolate.

Mine have hot chocolate on Christmas Eve because the Baileys and Rum are mine! They do have it the rest of the year too though.

Yes I prefer a bit of Stilton to a hot choc!

And hot choc is banned in the living rooms where the wood burners are bah humbug it's horrendous to clean up if it gets spilt!

I watched an old episode of Jamie's Christmas with bells on last night and I'm very tempted to try this hot chocolate and waffle combination...

I'm not a massive fan of hot chocolate but sometimes I'll have one as a treat with marshmallows if we go to Costa Chocolate

All year round= cocoa powder, sugar and milk
Christmas= horrendously overpriced chocolate beads that melt in the milk, or those spoons with a lump of chocolate attached. It's just fun. In the same way that there is always a bottle of whiskey in the house, and I love whiskey but it would never occur to me to drink it unless there was frost on the ground and carols in the air. It fits the season.

@Mouldycheese - Living rooms? You have more than one living room?

Yes it's an old house

We have got chocolate with a mountain of cream, marshmallows and cocoa sprinkled on top in December.

But I don't get all the new fuss over it. And what the heck is with these 'Hot chocolate stations' people are 'making'. They get all excited and go all out in getting a festive tray, put all the bits in jars, put it on the side and call it a 'hot chocolate station'

That's just daft.

Hot chocolate station, I am missing a trick there.

I've never associated hot chocolate with Xmas but I have recently discovered that hot chocolate with amaretto in is the most delicious thing ever!

Baileys hot chocolate is the drink of champions!

I also really fancy some Stilton now in my lonely 1 living room. Confused

I put hot chocolate powder, mini marshmallows and squirty cream in the boys' stockings - not because I think there is anything particularly magical about hot chocolate at Christmas, but because they are 18, 20, and 22, and it is damned hard to think of things to put in their stockings - and this has become a family tradition.

I put a satsuma in each stocking too - because it's a tradition here, not because they can only have one on Christmas Day. Ditto socks, boxers and shower gel.

Whilst we may have hot choc occasionally through the year, in advent it comes with cream, marshmallows and sprinkles or Baileys. It accompanies Christmas stories around the advent candle. It signifies that Christmas is on the way.
It's not just hot chocolate, it's Advent hot chocolate Grin.

PointlessFan - have you tried adding a spoon of honey too? It's like a boozy toblerone in a mug!
