Christmas

what would you like to eat and drink at a party between Christmas and new year?

Having a get together with friends, very informal.
It will be on the sunday after christmas, so i;d imagine everyone is sick of eating by that point.

Should i just do crisps, nuts and lots of alcohol?

Should i be putting on a spread? If so what would be good to provide.

any nice easy cocktail ideas?

My friend always does a get together around Christmas and she provides (well she provides some and everyone brings something too)...breads, cheese, ham, salad bits and bobs like cucumber, tomato and leafy things, crisps, nuts...

Definitely something non-Christmassy, so maybe something spicy? Something that includes salad for those who just want light and healthy after Xmas excess?

Is it an evening or afternoon get together?

Where we lived before DP used to go to a local football match on Boxing Day with friends so I used to make a big pot of chilli for when they all got back.

I'd do a big pan of soup with bread with a few nibbles.

Something spicy -

veggie chilli and the trimmings
curries and the trimmings
Both easy with a couple of slowcookers.

Or bread, cheese board and some sort of spiced lentil soup.

So from your replies i cant get away with nuts and crisps then?

Don't think you can get away with just crisps.

How about a chilli, served with grated cheese and baguette? Sour cream, guacamole etc. You could make it in advance and just reheat?

Then maybe some nice cookies/brownies with ice cream for pud.

Not crisps and nuts for the evening. Not unless you do cheeses/pickles/salad aswell.

I would agree with those who suggested doing something completely non-Christmassy.

One pot chilli with tortilla chips, salad, rice.
Veggie curry? You can make your own yoghurt dip and do some saag aloo? so cheap and tasty!!

curry or chilli

Very tasty nibbles. Crisps and nuts are too lazy.

I personally wouldn't be bothered by food as long as I had alcohol and good company! Nuts and crisps would do just fine for me but sometimes I feel like I'm the pleb of MN Grin.

You are making me hungry!
I'm still at work and want to eat chilli now!

Not nibbles - I hate poncy party nibbles.

Really lazy thing would be to make a chilli in advance, shove in a load of baked potatoes, soured cream, ready grated cheese. No faffing with rice and no real cooking on the day. Or baguette, as below.

Cheese.

Do a roast joint of your choice and serve on rolls with assorted sauces, like roast pork and Apple sauce or roast lamb and mint sauce. I would avoid the standard Xmas offerings like Turkey though.

Big trays of nachos and melted cheese and tomato salsa and guacamole on the side.
or
Bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon
or
loads of samosas and bowls of chutney, raita etc.

This chilli recipe from Nigella's Christmas is easy and tasty made with shin of beef (I buy cut up from butchers) and chorizo. It is cooked in oven and can be done in advance.

Chilli sounds good to me! You could do it in the slow cooker for minimal cooking effort. And lots of crusty bread, which will help soak up some of the alcohol and stop people getting too sozzled!

Chili is always a good bet and dead easy. Could you make it now and freeze and put the kidney beans in on the day?

Whatever you do, do something ordinary even cottage pie would be good!

I think chilli and baguettes would be good with a cheese plate.
Thanks

Huge dish of roasties sprinkled with sea salt and rosemary (make double the amount you would think everyone loves em!)
Big dish of grilled sausages and chicken legs (can be done in advance and served cold ) , grated cheese, coleslaw, green salad, salsa, pickes on the side.

some kind of pudding , pavlova or cheesecake, with some winter berries perhaps from M&S or similar ?

Buy a few boxes of party food that just needs heating up, plus crisp, nuts & olives.

As a PP said, I'd fancy something non traditional by that stage so if turned up to see a buffet of Mexican & Chinese nibbly bits I'd be a very happy bunny!

Bbq pulled pork in the slow cooker with wraps, cheese, coleslaw and salad. Stick it all on the table and folk can help themselves. Ten minutes prep, cook for 8 hours, 5 minutes to shred it and its done

I love pulled pork.
Thanks again for the ideas.
What about drinks?
Be nice to offer something different to red and white wine.
I'm not keen on doing fizz.
Will have beer etc.
