I've just bought a wii u for my boys for Christmas. Any recommendations for what to get with it? I was thinking of a couple of controllers, are the 10.99 ones on eBay ok or would I need the official ones? It comes with mario kart, any recommendations for another game would be good!

How old are your boys? DS (7) loves Skylanders - the older games and figures can be found pretty cheaply now.

Not sure about controllers as we only have Nintendo ones.

They are 4&7. Got to be careful I don't just get a couple of games I want to play! They love mario Galaxy on the wii, so I was thinking I could get one of the mario games.

What would I need to get for skylanders? Is there an idiots guide as it would be quite good to get them a collection of older ones if they have come down in price.

I got DS skylanders swap force for a tenner recently and then there's loads of figures you can get for them (but you don't need them all). There's a strategy guide you can get for the kids to learn the game. If you shop around the figures are pretty cheap now in Argos, smyths etc.

Sorry, so basically you get the game itself and the extra figures are add ons. DS saves his pocket money to buy figures.

Depending on your budget, Lego dimensions is new out this year, but pretty pricey!

Disney infinity is brilliant, they've just released a Star Wars one. Any of the Mario games will be a hit. DS3 had one last year and plays it a lot. You can also play regular Wii games on it so will be able to pick them up cheap.

Mario party and wii u party are both popular in our house. My girls also like Mario maker that lets you create your own mario levels.

My kids love Skylanders. Lots of the older ones are super cheap atm in Tesco and Smyths. Starter pack (game, portal and 2-3 figures) is under £10. The early and cheap ones are:
Spyros Adventure, Giants, Swap Force.
Tesco also have figures for under £3.
They can play without extra figures but the extras make it easier and unlock different areas. Check the figures box for which games they work on.

Other popular games are: Disney infinity (another one with figures)

All Mario games

You can also play wii games on it. There are many bargain wii games.

Beware splatoon. It's a great game but needs a controller that's an ass to get (classic controller ) to multiplayer it.

Thank you for all the suggestions, the games all look amazing.

Think I'll ask dh to get me the new wii fit. Does anyone know if my old woo board will work with it?

I love the look of Lego dimensions but it is still really expensive. I bet it won't drop in price too much either being Lego.

I think I'll go for skylanders and a mario game.

Anyone have any advice on which controllers to get?

I bought cheaper controllers for my original Wii and they were fine, they all work in the Wii u, they only thing to watch out for is "Wii motion plus", some of the cheaper ones don't have this and some games don't work without it.

Any mario game will be a hit. We all love mario 3d world here, it's quite like mario galaxy. We have 2 wii controllers here and the game pad.

I love the Zelda and Pikmin games, but I don't know if they are suitable for ages 4 and 7. It's worth having a look at them and see what you think.

I've just remembered the lego games - they are brilliant. There's a Harry Potter one, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars and Indiana Jones. There's also a new one, Jurassic World, but I don't think it's as good as the others.

MIL has just bought our DC Wii U for Xmas. Tell me.....it only comes with Mario Kart then?

Also will we need to buy extra controls? Does it not come with controls?

Anyone? If I buy LEGO games will we need nunchucks and the like or will the game pad work. And if we want 2 people to play at once will we need another game pad.

I am a bit confused tbh! I thought I was buying a toy they could share but it looks like the controller is single use only so will have to shell out for 2 hand held things if they want to play against each other.

I don't even know where to start! Do we need a nunchuk or whatever? Do we need something else?

Good games for a 5 and 9 yr old?

Some games need nunchucks,'some don't - will say on the game. You can do 2 player with one using the handset and one using controller - unless it's an original Wii game which the handset doesn't work for.
