Anyone buying their DC a tablet for Christmas and want to tell me what they bought?

We've decided to buy 3yo and 7yo DC a tablet for christmas, so that I get my iPad back to use myself!

I'd decided a month ago to get the hudl 2, despite iffy reviews about the screen cracking and it not charging. But they're like hens teeth to get hold of, so I will have to reconsider.

Happy to pay maybe £1-200. They would only use or for games and internet. The 7yo likes watching wildlife documentaries on iplayer, and the 3yo likes games and youtube uploads.

I'd been planning to get DD a Hudl for her 9th birthday but, as you say, they're now out of stock and to be honest the things I've heard about them since discovering this have been enough to make me feel glad I didn't get one! I wanted to use my Tesco points to pay for it so have gone for a Kindle Fire - the £79 one. DD1 also had a Kindle Fire for her 9th birthday and it's served her well, although it drains quickly now (2.5 years later), but she's pretty much graduated to a mobile phone anyway. The only issue we found is that you can't get quite as many apps as you can on Apple or Android, but there have only been a couple of disappointments on that front.

We're thinking of getting DS2 a Samsung Galaxy tab for his birthday, he spends a fair amount of time at hospital appointments so thought he'd like something to download his own games on to

I bought dd (7) a samsung galaxy tab 4 last year. It has honestly been the best present she had and was a fraction of the cost of an ipad. I recommend buying a case for whatever you choose

How are you with technology? An old iPad would be about that price, and you would know how to use it. You can get them from Apple's refurbish store, they come with warranties etc. just a thought, as i have struggled with other tablets, even though i work in IT, so expect to know how it all works.

We were going to get a hudl for days but they have been discontinued. So the next plan is to get a kindle fire. From what I can gather the kindle fire kids is a normal kindle fire with a blue or pink cover and the repair insurance. Does that sound right?

You can make childrens profiles on them, which don't have access to social media, Internet etc, great parental controls, and much easier to use

I've got DD a reconditioned iPad, mostly because school use them.

I was going to get her a nexus. She uses mine all the time and loves it.

I've bought my 5.5 and 4 year olds one of the new kindle fire kids tablet each. I've set them up and had a play on them myself and I'm quite impressed, it's the £50 fire tablet, a great rubber case that would be £20 anyway, a years freetime subscription and a 2 year guarantee that they will replace it if anything happens to it including water spills, smashed screen etc all for £80 which is a pretty good deal I think.

The freetime unlimited for kids that you get free for a year has masses of books, games and programs on that I know they'll love, you program it with your child's age and gender when you set it up so it suggests appropriate stuff, you can also log into the adult profile and download other apps which you then allow onto the kids profile through the settings so I've done this with Iplayer, Netflix and CBeebies etc.

I did buy 32gb SD cards for them both for £12 though because I don't imagine the 8gb storage will last very long.

My only gripe is that I obviously wanted to set them up etc straight away so I could check they weren't faulty in time to send them back but that means you have to start the freetime subscription straight away meaning they've lost a couple of months really by the time Christmas comes, I'll probably carry on paying for it after it runs out though because it looks so good and I think it's only about 3.99 a month. I hope they like them!

OP I too had decided on the Hudl but alas twas not to be.

We are thinking about the kids fire only because of the warranty...it is ^ this tablet but with case and warranty.

Other MN have told me they got cases for far cheaper than £20. I think there are good and bad sides to all the tablets.

Complaints about the fire was that it got really really SLOW.

STILL THERE isnt much option open to us, so we are deliberating the kids fire and or the one above.

I just want her to be able to get mine craft, animal jam and furby apps.

I dont really want to pay subscriptions so am hoping we get free stuff as well...

I have got the Kindle Fire recently for my 7 year old - the new one for £50. She uses it for the i player, Netflix, Minecraft, various other games/apps - Minion Rush, Spotify, she uses the camera and video camera as well. The new one has a front facing and rear facing camera unlike the older Kindle Fire.

After much discussion I was swayed by dp into getting the dds (age 2 and 4) proper tablets and then blocking things I don't want them to have (e.g. internet). We got Nexus 7s and a kid friendly case and they work really well.

Oooooh, the kindle fire seems to be popular. I gave a basic question - can you use google on a kindle fire? I seem to recall, but I'm not sure if it's true someone telling me that you couldn't access google through them.

I mean can you use google as a serve engine, rather than buying google play apps, I think? The DC like iplayer and youtube for music videos and Songs more than anything else.

You can't sign in and get the "official" YouTube on the Kindle but you can still watch YouTube videos. We download a version of YouTube from the Amazon App Store - you can't create your own YouTube channel, can't sign into your own account but you can view stuff already on YouTube - as the 4 million videos of My Little Pony that are regularly watched in my house proves. I'm sorry I've probably made that sound very longwinded but I'm hearing it via a very exasperated child

Does iplayer work in the same way please? So do you go joy the Amazon App Store and download iplayer?

Yes, that's how we did it - just download the Iplayer App from Amazon store.

Samsung tablet has been fab. Still working after numerous drops and easy to use.
