Lego Dimensions

We are possibly getting a PS4 (currently only have PS2 and Wii) and I am wondering whether to get Lego Dimensions for DS(10) for Christmas. We have never had anything like this before eg Skylanders

DS has a couple of lego Wii games which he really enjoys. Do you think this game is worth the money? I am assuming to get the most from it you will need more than just the starter pack and so it suddenly becomes very costly.

I found skylanders and infinity to be excellent. The fact you can buy the characters as birthday gifts or other presents is great. The game is usually great on its own and the add ons are just that, add ons.

No experience of dimensions but it looks pretty good and can't imagine it works much different.

Dimensions is new, but my ds1 has asked for it. I think it's a wonderful idea, that you have to build all the bits before you can play the video game, which is a but more interesting and long lived than just opening a skylanders box.
It's expensive, and I know a lot of people object to the collecting aspect, but I think it's a great new spin on lego and tbh, it looks really cool!

Ds1 is getting the starter pack from Santa, and a level from each set of grandparents.
