It says '30 hours' to defrost in the fridge; so if I want to put it in an oven at say 10am Xmas Day, it needed to be in the fridge at 4 am today but I'd also planned on brining it a la Nigella so add a further 6 hours to that so yes, 10pm last night would have been right, but I was merrily swilling pinot with my mates then!

Defrost it in a sink of water then.

No water!! Leave it in a cool room. Nothing defrosts in my fridge.

Try leaving out on worktop. As find things don't defrost in fridge. Just got stuffing and sausages defrosting on worktop at moment. Will put in fridge once slightly defrosted

Why no water? I've always done chicken like that if I forget.

If your oven has a defrost setting, put it in the oven. It'll defrost in half the time

Bernard Matthews guide gives thawing times using a cool room rather than the fridge. Do you have a suitable non-fridge place to leave it, as that shortens times by several hours?

me! me!
I forgot. The poor thing is currently sitting on a tray on top of the freezer in the garage like a giant white rock. Thanks goodness it's mild day. I'll check it later and take emergency action this evening if required.

Get it out of the garage momb & into your kitchen or utility room as the garage is just too cold for it to thaw properly.

Just defrost at room temp. 2 hours/kilo, then put in fridge.

Mine is 2 kilos, when should I take it out?No room in fridge.

Biscetti Wed 24-Dec-14 10:31:42

I'd take it out v last thing tonight. As long as you don't have your heating on overnight, it'll be absolutely fine.

We defrosted a ham in 4 hours by leaving it in a bowl full of cold water in the sink and leaving the cold tap on a trickle. Horrendous waste of water but saved the day. It too said 30 hours in the fridge to thaw.

2kg crown (according to BM, linked above) takes 7-9 hours at cool room temperature.
