Going abroad for Christmas?

Anyone do this? I've never liked the idea before, particularly somewhere warm - it wouldn't feel Christmassy! But a student of mine was telling me today about her family Christmases in Austria and it sounded wonderful! Snowy mountains, local traditions and food. I was quite jealous!

So do any of you go anywhere festively snowy for Christmas?

No but we used to go to Spain at Xmas when I was a kid and it was very xmassy. We go to Austria every summer and it is beautiful, would be great in the snow (but we like being in uk and don't ski)

We went to Iceland last year - loved it. Would go back like a shot - it was a very low key Christmas but great fun.

We often go to friends who have a family chalet in the Swiss alps, and have utterly lovely times. When we were all still students, we were all skint and none of us had access to a car, and the chalet is quite isolated, so you had to ski down to the nearest town for supplies and carry it back in a rucksack. There were a lot of slightly drunken snowfights in the early hours when the temperature was minus seventeen.

We are going to France to the Alps. Ideally for some skiing, although the snow is not great. Christmas will be relaxed and fun.

I don't really ski either to be honest, but it was the only way to get food, so I struggled on!

I never ski when we go there now - the others do, and I go on long mountain walks, read in the sun, and sometimes take the lift to a mountain top for lunch with the skiers.

Beangarda - that sounds lovely! I'd definitely be wanting a little chalet or something, rather than a hotel, wonderful though the Salzburgerhof looks Davros.
