Dairy-Free Christmas

DH can't eat dairy, and I'm trying to work out what he can have at Christmas. He's doing okay with savoury things, but when it comes to desserts/treats, I'm running into problems. DOes anybody have any good ideas for things I could make for him that feel a little more special, but still don't have dairy in them?

Thanks!

I know it isn't special as such, but my friend does a lovely berry sorbet (three scoops of different berry flavours) with fresh fruit on the top.

Lots of mince pies and christmas puddings are dairy free.

Booja booja truffles are good.

Check out the vegan section in Ocado for ideas (don't have to buy there but there's lots, they might have a special dairy free bit too thinking about it)

Meringue snowmen with berries and dairy free ice cream (but that's for my 6yr old so your DH might not be as enamoured.)

I use this for my DD in any recipe using butter :-

www.puredairyfree.co.uk/

Lots of recipes on their site, too (even a christmas pudding!)

I use coconut cream or almond milk in ice-cream.

(Rice milk makes a spectacular rice pudding - though this isn't very christmassy!)

I'm making a lemon chiffon cake for christmas day as it is delicious and very light. Boxing day we may have meringues and fruit or a chocolate and orange angel cake. (If you make in a ring mould it looks "special" drizzled in orange icing decorated with physalis and dusted with icing sugar - good enough for christmas or entertaining, anyway!)

Also green and blacks 70% chocolate is dairy free, for any recipes with chocolate.

DS has been dairy and soya free since 7mo ( now 3). For main course just making sure no baisting with butter or butter on veg etc. Do pots in oil. We don't care much for bread sauce anyway.

Puddings wise....i have made dairy free xmas pud this year, but just bought a free from one last year. It was fine. Served with custard made from oat milk ( or any other), and a bought dairy free ice cream.

Also made DF chocolate cake ( can substititue DF spread for butter or use oil based recipe) as a thin sheet and rolled it up like a sort of yule log. If you can have soya i think there are creams you can whip but i made a sort of butter icing out of DF spread ( acceptable) and covered in melted dark choc.

Also nice fruit salads, sorbets etc.

Good luck!

I got this in asda.

They also has massive gingerbread men that were dairy free. You can usually find a dairy free gingerbread house kit at ikea.

I'm attempting a vegan buche de Noel as my kids can't have eggs, but I'm sure it would be easy to adapt a recipe with egg to be dairy free using pure spread and soya/oat milk.

Hi there, my daughter was born with a huge amount of allergies. Please check out a website called Pig in the Kitchen. The lady goddess has unfortunately stopped posting but there are some fabulous recipes on there for all allergies. Waitrose is also a good bet, they have lots in. I used to make chocolate cakes, trifle with a dairy free alternative custard, pudding etc

If you're looking for vegan ice cream Asda sell the Swedish glace in vanilla flavour. I'm vegetarian but like it better than dairy ice cream. I don't usually eat desserts so no ideas on what you could make sorry.

The Tom Kerridge orange cake is df (and gf), and v seasonal with the spiced fruit compote - though I bought a tub of compote from M&S last year.

You can do a great whipped cream sub using tinned coconut milk, just look on Pintrest for the method.

Can he use goat's milk products? We do a cow's milk free Christmas dinner, I use goat's milk for the Yorkshire puddings, goats butter to baste the turkey, have some goat's cream for pudding (buy a dairy free pudding) and make mince pies with a mixture of Pure and trex in the pastry (make the mincemeat dairy free as well). Get all the goat products from Ocado / Waitrose.

One year I made a cranberry and orange meringue pie from the BBC good food website, used goat's butter in the filling and Trex/Pure pastry.
