Elf on the shelf (sorry)

Sorry, this has probably been done to death but I'm struggling to find it.
I've decided this year that I want to do this but I don't know where to start.
I have seen the genuine elves at around £30 but then you need adoption very etc etc. are these more money or is it all included?

Hi AtSea, I'm not really sure of your question, perhaps there's a typo there?
If the £30 is seeming a bit much, you can get these for under £20: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/098153970X/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1416257310&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX200_QL40&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21
We have the female version and she's brilliant! :)

we just use a toy elf. Why does it need to be the "official" one?
Ours was less than a fiver and the kids love the game.

You can get elves from sainsburys/card factory/Clinton cards/toys r us from 99p-£5
Also google christmas elf doll/toy you should find other online sellers ranging in prices, they will tend to come with stuff like adoption certificate etc, passport, welcome letter. ( you can also create these yourself)

Also take a look at facebook page christmas elf antics for ideas xx

Don't feel you have to do the official elf business, we have a pair of cute elves that do funny stuff cos they are on their holidays before they need to be back on duty Christmas eve, I don't really like the 'spying' aspect of EOTS so I don't do it, elves do funny / a little bit naughty stuff in the night time and have some fun celebrating the season with us before they ride the sleigh with Santa on Christmas eve. I do a quick letter in fancy font and copious clip art and the elves bring the advent calendars on Dec 1st, asking nicely if they might stay again cos they had such a lovely time last year.

I also like the idea of the kindness elves, suffice to say they suggest (by note) fun stuff to do for others during the holidays.

I was in two minds whether to do it because my dd (and am really not bragging) is a really good girl so she would find it odd that something has come to check on her to see if she is naughty - she is sometimes a wee bit cheeky but never really naughty. However I know she will like the fun element of having a naughty elf to stay.

So, Santa is sending Emily The Elf on 1st December as he has run out of ways to tell Emily off, he is asking DD to show Emily how to be a good girl. Obviously on Emilys first night here she will toilet paper the play room etc and as the month goes on Emily will become better behaved.

On Christmas Eve Emily goes back to Santa and a thank you Elf Box is left in her place.

We do the naughty elf come to learn as well. He is pretty naughty but gradually over December improves so by the time the school holidays start the dc are waking up to him behaving well and leaving little treats, puzzles, he's baked etc. until he leaves on the 24th and they wake up to their Christmas jammies and dvd.

The elf in our house is looking out for kind behaviour. Nobody's naughty/nice, she just hides round the house, and the initial letter she brings will say that she is looking forward to seeing all the kind things the DC have been doing.
