Christmas

Tree topper that isn't an angel or star

I have a yearly quest to find a tree topper that I actually like. We aren't Christian and celebrate Christmas in a more secular way (I realise this is something that incenses some posters but is not about to change). I avoid overtly Christian images and favour more natural themes on my tree (am a pagan so this fits in with my beliefs).

Anyway, I wouldn't have an angel for this reason and a star seems a little wrapped up in the nativity story too. We had a fairy for a while until it's head fell off, but the only replacements I could find were very delicate and promoted a female image I'm not comfortable with. We had an owl last year which is ok but a bit garish.

Really I would like a sun as this would fit my actual beliefs well, but have never found one or a sun decoration I could fashion into a tree topper. But I'd be convinced by anything else nice that isn't overtly Christian.

Anyone seen anything?

What about getting some sort of fairy and re-creating it as a mistletoe fairy? Wouldn't need to be obviously female, more a spirit of the sacred plant.

What about a Father Christmas tree topper? That's what I have

It may be to religious for your tastes, but we had a gods eye that my dad made. I'm on my phone so can't link but if you google gods eye craft it shows pictures and describes how to make them. It's an easy craft project for kids and you just need two sticks and some yarn.

I've got a sparkly bird that is nice.

A bauble-style topper that comes to a point, like one [[http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Real-Glass-Christmas-Tree-Decoration-Christmas-Tree-Topper-Silver-or-Gold-/191340681771]] maybe? I'm from Holland and lots of people have tree toppers like that one there, I'm sure you could find one with a colour or design that maches the rest of your tree.

We had a winnie-the-pooh for years and for the last couple have had a sequinned bird from Paperchase lashed to the top of the tree. They have quite a good selection of Xmas stuff or look on Etsy or something - for a price you can have stuff made.

What about a elf? Smile or maybe a bird or butterfly ( I have seen a lot of large wire butterflies in the shops )?

one year we had danger mouse as a tree topper :-)

Any small cuddly toy should work

A glass finial! I picked one up in Wilko's last year then this year I've bought a 'vintage' '70s one from eBay.

A couple of years ago we had a stuffed dinosaur...

Ikea have sort of pointy things. Not representational. Gold and silver.

I'm happy with a star though (atheist with strong feelings about nature and midwinter celebrations)

What about one of those vintage pointed toppers, not sure how to describe them... But I see them on ebay here and there.

I have Rudolph. He is a cuddly toy that came as a present cuddling two bottle of smellies years ago. He now appears to precariously grip the top of the Christmas tree!

Thanks, lots of ideas! I'd never seen those glass finial things, that could work. I really like a lot of the ideas, a nature spirity fairy would be ideal, as would a bird or butterfly or. I'll check out paperchase, is there anywhere else I should be looking?

I would love a grinch, is that something you bought or made knitted ? A Father Christmas would be good too (like an homage to the capitalism of christmas!), I'd love tips on where to get one?

A small stuffed toy would be doable (love the christmas dinosaur!) How do you attach them?

I like some of the stuff that this lady makes and she's a pagan/Wiccan too (not sure exactly!) She has some nice pentacles on there, I bet she would make you something nice if you asked her.

If you can crochet, this Grinch could be made to work as a tree topper.

In fact, I may see if I can make one for the Woolly Hugs sale...

We have a glittery dove that we got from Asda 2 or 3 years ago. I'm not religious, but info like the "peace" symbolism of the dove. Bizarrely, he is called Robin.

Report
HolgerDanske · 14/11/2014 08:13

I think doves are lovely for that symbolism as well. And birds are always beautiful on the tree.
