I wanted to get a friend who has recently lost her mum something to remember her by at christmas like a decoration or ornament. I had a google without much luck, any ideas where I could get something nice?

I would veer away from the overly sentimental.

Is there anything that she liked in particular? Ie a particular flower or animal or something of that ilk.

I would be very wary of buying something like this for anybody who has lost somebody close, particularly at Christmas. It is a very very hard time. If you give something like this in memory of her mother, it then forces her to put it some place very prominent, as to not do so could seem to be some reflection on her Mum. But by having it somewhere prominent it forces her to think about her Mum. It's not like she'd 'forget' about her mum at Christmas, but sometimes as part of protecting yourself, you need to be able to think about things in your own time. Having a reminder, and especially so soon after her Mum's death, is perhaps not a good way to go. I also think the idea of a Christmas item isn't great, as at some time she's going to have to pack it away, and that could be upsetting for her.

Would you consider getting your friend something that would encourage her to mind herself? She could well be having trouble sleeping, so something like a nice massage could be good. I think it'd be good to get her something where she would go to a salon, as pampering things at home might not be great if she is feeling vulnerable (lounging in a bath at home gives you time to think, and that may not be what she wants).

If you do want to get something that would link to her Mum, would you consider a potted tree. Ones that flower are particularly nice, and seeing something grow can be nice. It also is something that can be outside, so isn't 'there' all the time.

It's lovely that you want to do something like this for your friend, but as her Mum has died recently, I think the most important thing is just to be there for her, and to tread carefully with whatever gift you choose.
