He has a small set of wooden cubes which he uses quite a lot.
I sort of think he'd love this (he doesn't like Lego much, finds it too fiddly, fine motor not great) but would he outgrow it really really quickly? I've finished buying for him but mil was asking what to get and she was eyeing up a robotic dinosaur (which costs even more). I'm trying to discourage this as know it will barely be played with.

What do you think?

I think it's fine, my 8 year old still plays with his younger brothers wooden blocks from time to time.

The wooden blocks we have are still played with by both my 10 and nearly 8 year old.

However we have had problems with block type play sets of various kinds, they are ok with the building but unless the creation is stable enough to play with once it's built it causes much frustration. If you're lookng to be able to play with little figures I'd think about a more sturdy castle.

It would be too young for DS but all children are different so you know best.
