Jamie Oliver gravy is yuk

Ok have attempted to get ahead and make JO's gravy. All it tastes of is star anise and burned onion. I'll keep it to go on chips as its a) too expensive to chuck and b) is a bit Chinese-y.
Any better recipes? I have just made some normal chicken stock if that helps...

Don't say that! I've got it in the freezer but didn't really taste it much before putting it away...

notapizzaeater · 21/12/2013 16:14

I've been making the hairy bikers diet one, stock couple of spoons ketchup (yes really) splash Worcester sauce and cornflour to thicken.

ProfYaffle · 21/12/2013 16:15

I love Jamie's gravy, will be making some on Xmas eve Smile

InTheRedCorner · 21/12/2013 20:37

I love Jamie gravy and will be making it tomorrow. I only add one star though.

HarrietSchulenberg · 21/12/2013 20:41

Don't know about his gravy but I spent a fortune on ingredients for his alternative Christmas pudding and it was utterly vile. I forced myself to eat most of it: the children had one mouthful and refused to entertain a second.

Jamie gravy is the best. mine is already in freezer. I've been making it for the last 3 years, have you added enough seasoning.

Jamie's gravy is awesome. Smile

Hassled · 21/12/2013 21:02

I really rate it, but I've dropped the star anise this year - I do love star anise, but not in gravy. It was just wrong.

I agree. the star anise is far too strong. leave it out.

MrsOnTheMove · 21/12/2013 23:01

Thanks for this as I was intending to make it tomorrow. Maybe I'll leave out the star anise!

Philoslothy · 21/12/2013 23:02

I am not a Jamie fan, but quite like this recipe.

MadameDefarge · 21/12/2013 23:05

It is gorgeous without. I feel the star anise really overwhelms the other flavours, and if you aren't into it, its not great.

Like I can't bear too much clove in bread sauce, but you could never put enough nutmeg in for me!

I think the key would be to leave the star anise out, until the gravy is finished, then try experiment with a teeny tiny bit, building up.

Huitre · 21/12/2013 23:06

Why on earth would you put star anise in gravy? That sounds really odd (and totally unnecessary).

Catsmamma · 21/12/2013 23:13

why are you all making gravy without the roasting tray??

Lift meat out of pan, tip excess fat over the roasties, use flour and veg water, S&P, maybe a bit of red wine, to boil all the meat gunk off the bottom of the pan, add maybe a dod of mustard or balsamic...taste as you go!

MadameDefarge · 21/12/2013 23:16

But you do use the roasting juices too

InTheRedCorner · 21/12/2013 23:21

I make in advance and freeze. Take put of the freezer on Xmas morning and then add the roasting juices before slowly reheating.

Methe · 21/12/2013 23:22

We had some posh gravy a couple of weeks ago from tesco that has star anise in it and it was rank!

Who wants aniseed gravy fgs!

Sharptic · 21/12/2013 23:26

I love Jamie Oliver's gravy, but from his ministry of food book. Just mashed up stuff from the roasting tin. ie veg, chicken fat, the odd wing, flour and add a bit of white wine, delicious!

Catsmamma · 21/12/2013 23:29

ahh..it was talk of the recipe that derailed me. I imagined you all weighing stuff out!

just go with the principles and never be gravy-less again!!

Huitre · 21/12/2013 23:32

I really really like aniseed sweets but I would definitely balk at it in gravy.

Oh crap. I made that today. Although I changed the recipe and added leeks no onion more garlic and I used a muscat wine instead. It tasted lovely.

I DIDN'T follow his mad idea about burning everything on the hob whilst thickening. Perhaps that's why yours taste burnt??

notsomuchroomattheinn · 22/12/2013 00:28

I never put the star anise in, I love the smell but not the taste.
Catsmamma this is just the base for the roasting tray bit.

HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 22/12/2013 08:00

DH, who usually makes a fantastic off the cuff gravy, tried this last year. Horrible. Back to making it up as he goes along this year.
