Can you recommend me some Christmas books for a toddler?

DD will be almost two at Christmas. I'd like to get some books about Christmas that will give her a bit of a feel about Father Christmas and stockings and reindeer etc. (sorry, we're not religious). I've bought The Night Before Christmas. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Stickman by Julia Donaldson is very popular with dd1.

Happy Christmas Boris is wonderful - Boris is a cuddly orange puppet, basically, and he has to help Santa deliver all the presents (when I say puppet, i mean the book has a puppet that you have to move around)

that's Not My Reindeer or That's Not My Santa - two years is just the right age to get the most out of those.

Twenty-Five December Lane is good for a longer lasting story.
(it's about a toy shop)

then there's Father Christmas Needs a Wee - where he's desperate for a wee but everyone keeps leaving him drinks.
and new at the end of this month - Father Christmas Comes Up Trumps
"The unmissable sequel to }Father Christmas Needs A Wee!{. This time Santa has eaten too many sprouts and you guessed it - he's got the gurgliest, rumbliest, groaniest tummy! But Father Christmas knows he must keep it in because he doesn't want children waking up in the middle of him dropping off their presents! A superbly silly and satisfying story which will have children laughing out loud throughout the festive period."

Topsy and Tim Meet Father Christmas
"The family are off to the local garden centre to choose a Christmas tree, and while they are there the twins meet a very special person. Inside Santa's Grotto is none other than Father Christmas himself! Topsy and Tim promise that they have been good all year, so Father Christmas gives them both a special present to take home. "

The Jolly Christmas Postman is lovely

DD reads stickman in the nursery. Didn't know it's about christmas. Thanks for the heads up. I'll be adding it to my amazon shopping basket. She loves her Julia Donaldson's books.

I got a Dora christmas last year. While she loves it, I hate it. Nothing rhymes and there's basically no story. It feels like it's written by an intern Hmm.

Oooh, thank you everyone. Some brilliant suggestions. I can see an evening on-line trying to decide which ones I'd like to get. I've got Stick Man already for DD's christmas, so she might get that early.

I have a pop up book of the Nutcracker. DS is obsessed. It has to be kept on a high shelf and only read under supervision!

aw, OneLittleToddleTerro - please don't put in your amazon shopping basket - buy it from someone independent.
if you go to //www.hive.co.uk that I posted earlier, your nearest independent will get the commission (or one that you nominate)

Lucy and Tom's Christmas by Shirley Hughes is sweet, and good for explaining what will happen at Christmastime to little ones.

Morris' Disappearing Bag by Rosemary Wells is my personal favorite!

Another vote for Dear Santa, it's fab!

Also my DDs had a lovely musical book that played christmas songs, anything like that is lovely.

Dear Father Christmas (the Jeanne Willis one) is fab. It rhymes and there are stickers too - it was a firm favourite last year with my then almost 2 year old.

Ds is almost three and we are off to the theatre to see stick man on Monday. I'm so excited!

Thanks everyone, I've plumped for Mog's Christmas, Dear Santa, Father Christmas Needs a Wee, Topsy and Tim meet Father Christmas, and Happy Christmas Boris - and noted all the other suggestions down for future years. And I have Stickman and That's not my Snowman

Hive actually worked out less expensive than Amazon. Does anyone know if the local bookshop still gets commission if the order is delivered to my home? I'd assume not.

Yeay! good choices!

yes, the local bookshop will still get the commission - they get a small percentage because of your order, not because you collect it from them :)

The Dinosaur who Pooed Christmas - can't remember the author but it's very funny.

I'm impressed with Hive.co.uk - I ordered on Tuesday and the books were delivered on Thursday. So they were quicker (and cheaper) than if I'd ordered from Amazon.

Littleblack thanks - I'll add that one to my list for future years!

I'm really glad you had a positive experience :)

It's rather a new thing - only been going about 2-3 years, i think, so it's great that they're getting it right :)
