We've bought dd (9) the Samsung Galaxy 2 tablet as they're bringing out version 3 so the price has dropped.
I should say, that all that ^ means diddly sqaut to me; it is dh who knows all about gadget in this household.

For under £50 i don't think you can wrong with something like this
Will probably be buying one (or something similar) for DD

ment too add they also have a player that supports omline movies, ipad doesn't have the player in them.

the Samsung galaxy tabs are fantastic and run off android meaning more and better apps than ipads. we have bought dd 1&2 one each after speaking to several shops all of which recommend them over ipads due to the technology in them. I must admit after having a wee shot on them to check they were ok I am very impressed with them, a few friends are now switching from ipad to Samsung too.

My dc's (8 and 11) have kindles fires and they are fine for what they use them for. Which ever one you get, I would recommend a decent case

For the poster who said most of a 6yo class had iPads, a lot of people refer to any tablet as an iPad, they may also have been refering to the family iPad, or it's just wishful thinking!

sorry, can't see it going any lower

derektheladyhamster Tue 08-Oct-13 12:30:06

just bought this for £79 for my 13 yr old. It dropped £20 yesterday and I can see it going any lower. Has good reviews

I think you could get an older iPad pretty cheaply... My grandparents wanted one but didn't want to pay iPad prices and ended up paying about 150 I think...

My DH & I have an iPad each and DD (2) plays with them so much (and so well!! I'm shocked) that my parents are probably going to get her an iPad mini for Christmas when she'll be three.

The two schools we're interested in both allow the children to have an iPad and take it in / store it at school for some lessons, so it'll be useful.

I dont even have an Ipad! (kids have samsung galaxy tablets)

DS (6) teacher who is in charge of IT for the whole school asked his class how many had an Ipad/Ipad mini. DS upset as only two of them didn't have one and he hates to be left out. Now wants one for Christmas but my budget doesn't run to that. Watching this thread with interest, no thanks to teacher!

The Samsung Galaxy is every bit as good as an Ipad Mini, and half the price. We read all the reviews first before buying them.
Meant we could get them one each instead of a shared Ipad. Which would have created mayhem.

I tried to get the one from Tesco but it sold out in 2 hours, so I got one from ToysRUS £99.99 down from £149.

I got DS2 a cheaper one from Amazon for £50

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood Sun 06-Oct-13 18:19:35

that is what I was wondering HiFi, we have a family iPad so it is the comparison that I was thinking about weighed up against it being his.

hifi Sun 06-Oct-13 18:13:35

iPad mini, anything else I think they will be disappointed

Nook HD and Nook HD+ will both take an sd card, to increase storage up to an additional 32gb. If he needs more than that, you seriously need to know what he's downloading.wink

ScornedWoman Sat 05-Oct-13 09:23:50

I'm thinking of buying a nook. The 8gb one is only £79. DS1 says that's not enough memory/storage though. Reviews are generally positive. Does anyone have a nook?

Got my Dd a tablet from eBay, new very basic she plays games, watches films and looks at YouTube. It cost about £40 it's pretty good for the price as I didn't want to get an expensive one until I was sure she would look after it

jezzasjockstrap Fri 04-Oct-13 17:13:40

Carphone warehouse have Nexus 7 old stock for £139. Only in brown though.

JakeBullet Fri 04-Oct-13 17:04:27

The Teaco Hudl has had a good write up and looks very drop proof too. You can apparently buy it with £60 worth of Clubcard vouchers when offers are on as well.

Lizzylou Fri 04-Oct-13 16:56:08

Our 2 (9 & 7) have the Samsung Galaxys. They're great.

I'm not judging, we're getting dd1 who's 6 a tablet for Christmas (we already have an iPad they both use all the time, but I'm sick of the arguing over it) we were thinking of a Kindle fire but think we may now go for the new Tesco one. Plus you can apparantly use your club card points to pay and Tesco will double the points u already have, so that could be quite a good saving
