People keep telling me to enjoy DD's first Christmas, how special it is, etc. She's four months old so doesn't have a clue what's going on, I think she's in the middle of this sleep regression I keep reading about, and I'm exhausted and miserable and still haven't got everything done for tomorrow. Someone please tell me when it gets better (not Christmas, life with a baby); I need something to look forward to.

It gets better! Next Christmas will be much more meaningful and exciting. My dd1 has an October birthday and it was much the same for us. We were exhausted and stressed by expectations and sleepless nights. She is 15 now though and so those days are long behind us. As I recall the baby thing got a lot easier at 6 months when they become much more engaged with life. I hope you get some sleep tonight and have some energy to enjoy tomorrow. Happy Christmas! :)

Thanks janey! Actually it got better as soon as I'd finished wrapping all the presents, even though that wasn't until nearly midnight; with all the baby stuff I'd forgotten that that job always hangs over me and makes me feel terrible till it's done. DD seemed a bit bewildered (and scared by some of her new toys!) but has had a much better day.

6 months. I might be able to cope with that. That's only another 8 weeks or so, and we've survived more than twice that already. Next challenge: not killing my MiL and step-FiL tomorrow when they try to tell me what my baby wants and get it wrong ...

I think literal first Christmases are dreadfully overrated (unless your DC was born on Boxing Day), and they only become fun with much bigger babies and toddlers, and improve again in the primary school years.

Hope you had a nice Christmas Day OP! When DS was a baby, I remember wishing I could have gone straight back to work when he was born and then start my maternity leave at 6 months! It's such a lovely age and I began to really enjoy being a parent then. It was probably around then that I realised my job was to look after DS, not run myself ragged keeping on top of the housework (DS rarely napped for more than 20 minutes) and once I realised that life was a lot less exhausting.

scaevola, one of the people who has been telling me most how great first Christmases are, has a DS who was born on Boxing Day! I tried pointing out this out, but she just told me how lucky I was that DD got to play Jesus in the church nativity play, because her DS was too old. At that point I changed the subject, because I still shudder at the memory of her DS's first nativity play (which I was organising), in which he was cast as a star, and she insisted he had to be dressed as a reindeer because she had the costume even though a star costume was provided ... Confused

KeepCalm, I can't say I've ever worried too much about the housekeeping Blush, but thanks for the reassurance.
