so we pick him up, then have presents and then we have to do all the hands on stuff in the kitchen, pots, vegs, sausages, what no.

i was thinking take the turkey out and put potatoes in, what is my window. i wnt to be around with the present opening and not stuck in the kitchen. at that crucial moment.
if i take turkey out, how long will it be ok to rest for?

I think turkey should rest for 30 mins, but check on a cookery website.

You could do the presents after the meal?

James Martin said it should rest for at least 1 hr for easy carving but I only ever make it to 30mins.

Mine often rests for a hour or more, covered in a double layer of foil, it will be fine. Think Jamie Oliver has said up to 90 mins resting before.

Once out of the oven, that's when everything else goes in, potatoes, parsnips etc, and I get another bit of a break before I have to finish everything off, gravy etc, which is the last 30mins before eating.

I'd eat first then do presents too tbh.

But I agree with Benaberry - JO's tip was double layer of foil then a couple of clean towels on top of that. Works a treat.
