What are your suggestions please?
For the best foods to buy, from the supermarkets.
Pre-packed, fresah or frozen, easy to cook/prepare/bung in the oven etc. What have you previously bought that was totally scrummy.

Was at Sainsbury's today. Saw some profiteroles. Something I just don't make. But are they any good? Could I get better one's at M&S/Lidl etc. How would you know? Unless someone recommended to you.... oh I bought this tart/ that cheesecake/ that quiche/ these party snacks/ those pigs in blankets etc.

So, can you tell me what your best 'finds' are, please? Smile

I bought an orange and chocolate cheesecake from Asda a few weeks ago for a quick and lazy pudding. It was only £2 so I wasn't expecting much but oh. My. Goodness.

Absolutely gorgeous. Like a gooey jaffacake.

I bought two more yesterday Grin.

This year winners are

Waitrose clove ham
Waitrose essential mince pies (better than the all-butter!)
Lidl lebkuchen, the bags with the white ones in are the best of all supermarkets
Aldi Specially Selected fudge (vanilla)

M&S do mini versions of their Melting Middle Chocolate puddings, they come in an oven safe plastic tray so that you can just pop them in to cook, you get 12 on a tray for 6 quid and they are part of the party food packs deal. DH and I like them when we only want a tiny pud! They can be frozen and microwaved too, we just cut the plastic tray for the amount we want and save the rest for another time.

Yy Lidl lebkuchen - very yummy.

Aldi rip off Baileys is nicer than the real thing.

Avoid the Sainsburys breaded mozzarella stick - they're vile!

Oh thanks. these are good. I had to look up lebkuchen, because I had not heard of it.

How many supermarket shops can you fit in, in one day? Wink I shall start planning (using aa routemaster or some such like) and let you know !!

Lidl do lovely ham/gammon joints. Ideal for ham in coke.
Also nice Lebukchen biscuits.

Not overly Xmasy but Asda do some very nice fresh soups in their Chosen By You range. Good for starters, or for healthy lunches in the days after Xmas.

m&s butter with sea salt is the best butter ever.

Love the Leith's range at Asda at the moment. Their £4 Black Forest dessert would be an excellent Christmas Day pud alternative.

AVOID the lobster and prawn discs from M&S. they are horrifyingly rank.

The Lidl pannetonne is good (and cheap!), we toast it on Christmas day for breakfat.

Also there cold meats and pickles are good and cheap. We get them to supplement the leftovers for the days of sandwiches after Christmas.

M&s mini caramel/chocolate flapjack thingies (shaped like Christmas trees) in the party food offer. Very sweet, but utterly gorgeous. The brownies weren't great though, bit dry for my taste

M&s bacon and cheese rolls in the party food as well - nowhere else does processed cheese wrapped in bacon quite the same.

Half-Baked Cake Co Yule log from Tesco (in the chiller cabinet, was on offer last week). Made one at the weekend as a test and it was lovely, convincingly home made taste, and very easy. You just bung the two paper cases of cake mix in the oven, leave to cool, squeeze some vanilla buttercream in a slit cut in each one, then cut, stick together and coat with the chocolate buttercream. Ds1 loved helping because it was all the messy fun bits of cooking with none of the boring bits, and it tasted fab, dusted liberally with icing sugar snow...
