First course ideas?

Any ideas for what to have before the main meal? We're in charge of getting the first course sorted. So far we thought about canapés but got no further.

Prawn/seafood cocktail , a spiced soup like parsnip with lovely bread rolls, melon balls and parma ham? Just off the top of my head.
