Need Elf on the Shelf ideas!

Elf is arriving in 5dys (nearly 4 now) and I know we've got time to think about it still, but we're just clueless about what to do.

In our house we have DD1, 12- non-believer of about seven years- who knows about Elf on the Shelf, but won't know until the other DCs know where he's hidden etc;

Then we have DD2, aged 5, and DS, who's 3, who are very firmly in the believing camp! They're the ones we will be doing it for.

We are getting one elf and need ideas. We'll plant him to be discovered on December 1st.

We were thinking about having him discovered hiding in the wellingtons, or, because he'd fit on a Christmas decoration, putting him in the sleigh bit of the decoration where he'd fit. Alternatively, hang him from the letter box with the explaining things halfway through it or below him?

From there we might hide him in different places. Knowing DS, something involving his underwear will probably be involved (he'd laugh his head off if we planted him in a pair of pants ) and we were thinking about sticking miniature Christmas hats on the photos, as well as putting them on the DCs, and Elf being discovered in a Christmas hat or something.

We're really confused!

Completely clueless beginner Elf on the Shelf person here! Please help!

We are new this to the Elf on the shelf this year and I've got loads of ideas from Pinterest I also picked up an Elf on the shelf dvd from Matalan yesterday £2.99 :)

Thanks whimsy. We live about an hour and a half away from a shopping centre, thankfully that's got Matalan. Long drive, but so much less hassle! Pinterest is very useful! Thanks.
