Christmas

Still stuck with dd1 who is 8 (stocking fillers)

Dd1 has asked for a wii and skylaners for christmas, we will be getting the wii 2nd hand (£30-£40) and then the skylanders starter pack.

Dd (aged 6) will be getting lots of smaller cheaper things (she has a long list of tat) so will have quite a lot to open compared to dd1.

What can i get dd1 so she has more to open? she's 8, is a tom boy (hates pink girly things), not interested in clothes or shoes, likes to read (harry potter), loves pokemon and likes things you can collect (not sure we really want any more collections though). She does need a dressing gown so will get her one of those. What else can i get her?

The book people do lots of sets of books for very good prices, you would be able to get a good few for under £10.

Craft kits? Home bargains/poundland etc have lots of little sets.

Top trumps cards, millions of themes on those.

The works and home bargains have Scene it games for £5 - £9, again lots of themes.

Book mark.

Is 8 the right age for Moshi monsters and squinkies? Home bargains have lots of little sets of them, and have an organiser to put the collection in.

my dd1 will be 8 in march. she wants moshi monsters, angry birds, craft stuff, lego friends, and buzz lightyear. she doesnt like to read (shame because i love reading) and hasnt the concentration for long stories like harry potter. currently she likes the snail and the whale, and room on the broom. about the longest she can sit still.

I bought her the Harry Potter Scene it (forgot i had bout it) which she will love and have ordered her the one Harry potter book she hasn't got.

Last year she was moshi monster mad but now she's not too bothered, she's not to bothered about craft anymore either, she's a bit of a computer geek (spends too much time on there) and loves something called 'fight my monster'. She would probably like something like a remote control spider but would only play with it for christmas and then it would be forgotton about. Last year she had far too much (lots of lego) and by boxing day she was back on the computer and didn't want to know (i had to build the lego).

Dd2 isn't bothered with reading, she loves the mr men but i cant ever see her reading big books like dd1. Maybe i should get dd1 a 2nd hand kindle or e-book rather than buying her tat? trouble is she's still young and expects lots of tat, its hard to know what to do as i dont want my house full of tat/toys that dont get played with.

Can you pad it out with practical gifts, like socks, pants, toiletries, novelty tooth brush, so she has a few more things to open.

Would stationery be any good?

How about an I-Spy book, card game (eg scrabble slam, uno, go fish), Annual, story cd, funky pens and stationary...

Last year i bought her lots of stationary, anual, card games, drawing books etc.., most of it is still here untouched or dd2 has pinched it Sad.

She might like a i-spy book though (i loved them when i was here age), i usualy put a new tooth brush in her stocking, she doesn't realy like board games (we have scrabble and a few other games which dont get played). She loves DVD's but its hard to find ones she likes (i know she would like 'jurasic park'), the same with book, she loves reading but i have bought her so many books that she doesn't like. She loves fantisy books, any ideas?

bop it? dd(8) got it for her bday. dd also likes Where's wally, good priced pack of those on Book People at the moment. How about some non-fiction books? Plenty of those on Book People too. My dd likes to read and was pleased with the more factual books and weirdly really wanted a dictionary!! New Pjs? My dd also like Moshi's last year but has since passed them onto her brother(5yo) so at least they weren't wasted!

If she loves fantasy try The Dark is Rising quintet by Susan Cooper. The first one Over Sea Under Stone would be good for her age. My dgd aged 9 is having binoculars £6.99 from Home Bargains, a big colour changing torch, a globe which lights up and a planetarium to project on the bedroom ceiling.
Top of her list is "the biggest box of chocolates in the world" Grin

Just came on here to recommend the Dark is Rising sequence but pipped to the post by The Grey Lady. My DD is very similar to yours OP and if I didn't still have my own copies of these from when i was her age then I'd buy them for her. I was a little unsure of whether they'd be too scary for an 8 year old but I think if they have read the HP series then they'll be fine!

DD has asked for Moshi Memebership, and horrible histories DVDs or books, she will get the obligatory selection box and a cuddly toy of some sort to add to the mammoth selection she already has. We also buy tickets or make up pur pwn vouchers for some sort of 'experience' treat for her, so a cinema visit with popcorn or afternoon with mum and a hot choc and sundae in your favourite cafe type thing.

My favourite fantasy books are 'The Weirdstone of Brisingamen' (Alan Garner), 'Redwall' (Brian Jacques - not really fantasy but awesome action and animals not people) & The Hobbit. Neil Gaiman books might work too. Could try Watership Down for that age.

More edgy (less saccharine, I mean) Disney DVD that I love is The Emperor's New Groove.

Thank you, lots of great ideas, i will look at all the book sugestions, we have 'the hobbit' but she wasnt too bothered about it, i think she's finding it hard to find anything as good as Harry Potter, she's now reading the Harry potter books again. She's read watership down too but isnt too bothered about animals ( she prefers dragons, wizzards and beasts), she's read all the beast quest books, how to train your dragon (which she loved).

She would love a horror story or dvd, doesn't seem to be scared by much (tonight she wanted to walk through the grave yard).

I think she might like 'bop it' (if not i could play with it), one game she did love (a few years ago) was 'wack a mole', sadly it got broken so maybe we could replace with a similar game?

Do you have a Hawkin's Bazaar near you? It's a shop that my sons and daughter adore and they do loads of sticking fillers/ stretchy men, slinky, kaleidoscopes, bouncy balls... (At Christmas they sell a stocking full of stocking fillers)
