How much do you spend on pressies for family?

We usually go totally OTT for family - my parents, my sister and her family - spending about £100+ per person for Xmas. But I buy most all of the pressies and I have been feeling like I spend from Sept to Xmas worrying about shopping, not enjoying the run up to Xmas and the spiritual element! Talked about it with my sister and we have decided a £20 limit for adults, £50 for kids this Xmas.

What do you do? How much do you spend? Will we enjoy Xmas less this year with fewer pressies, or will we feel liberated? I feel guilty for spending money on us too, when so many people in the world are poor.

£15 each on our adult siblings, £30ish on each parent. £100+ on an adult is way too much IMO!

£25 each on parents (only dads left on either side). £15 on nieces and nephews. Nothing on siblings.

I am stopping presents for any family I don't come into close contact with more than once a year. Its stupid. I just get them things they dont want. They just get me things I dont want.
If I find something I know someone wants, I spend a bit more on it, but if I'm just buying random stuff, not so much.
Step mum I will get something for (even though she protests) and spend up to £15
MIL I spent £25 this year (already found her a discount bag)
Stepsis and BIL - £0 because I never see them and don't know what they like
Their daughter - I will spend about £20 on her
SIL - we do the £5 challenge at christmas as she's skint. Sometimes I make stuff for her like bags/hats etc.
Her daughters - £20 each
DH - whatever. If he wants something I get it. If not, I just get him bits and bobs.
Uncle Ian (uncle-in-law) up to £10. He never needs or wants anything, but we are his only family as he lost his partner and has no children, so its nice to get him something.

All the adults also get home-made stuff from the kids. Like the biscuits I sent to MIL that specifically said 'open on arrival' on the box. She didnt follow instructions and waited for a fortnight to open it. I don't imagine they were all that tasty...

£50 for pil - they do alot for us
£30 on my parents
about £10 -20 on siblings.
£5 on wine or chocs for all other adults

I usually buy a book and a game for the 3 children in the family so whatever that costs £15-20ish

We do a Secret Santa between the siblings in our house (6 of all, all grown adults). "A decent present" is the instruction - roughly ?50 budget but I think some blow that one.

The other 4 (or even 5 if trying to keep SS a secret), as well as 3 significant others (which may even be 5 SO's this year, am not sure) all get a token, ?5 limit. We have a stocking each to put these items into (eldest sister was daft enough to sew these a couple of years back, and I am dreading being told that another 2 are needed this year as I've no time to sew at the mo).

I tend to spend about ?100 on Mum and Dad, combined. Some years a combined present, others are individual.

PIL get the same budget.

BIL and wife, I budget ?40 (I think this year will be less as we found something lovely in a sale), SIL a bit more as she's finishing a house and needs furnishings (maybe ?60).

I have 1 aunt and family on Mum's side to buy for, about ?30 for a family gift there. We don't exchange with my Uncle, and my Gran died during the year.

And my Dad's family is large but agreed last year to only buy for their godchild (and us for our godparents), with a KK draw for the siblings and husbands/wives (copying us!!). So we only have to buy for 1 aunt/uncle (I have my other Gran, in lieu of Grandad), about ?40 there too.

And then there are 3 cousins who are young (11, 7 and 3), as well as 5 nieces and nephews - about ?20 each on those.

DH has 1 uncle and 1 aunt, about another ?30 each. And another aunt locally here for a token, ?15 or so.

So there's enough (and then there's school teachers, creche minders, car drivers, au pair......and the postman's "box" - it all adds up here!).

I don't always spend the full budget, but I start out with a figure of close to ?1,800 in January and keep a close eye on sales, and get crafty and creative where I can too!!

Between £15 and £20 on the adults.
Around £10ish on the kids (we have 10 nieces and nephews).

This has changed a lot in the last 3-4 years - since we have had kids of our own and the number of nieces and nephews have gone from 2 to 10!! :)

We've got 5 sisters (+ 5 partners) between us so it all tots up! I reckon we spend around £600 a year easily each christmas. The total amount hasn't probably changed, just who gets what. Scary when you think of the total!!

£30-£40 on each parent + 1 gp (they are very generous with presents for us and ds)

£20 each on 5 nieces and nephews

£0 on mine and dh's siblings and partners (by mutal agreement we forego the presents and make an effort to spend time together instead - saves me buying 14 presents!)

I spend the following:
£20 each on parents, that includes something from the kids
£20 on aunty (she buys a lot for the kids and I'm almost as close to her as I am my mum iykwim)
£5 each on my other aunty, my sister, sister's husband, my sister's 3 (adult) kids
£20-25 on a friend and her family (i.e. total spend on all 4 of them works out about £20+)

We spend £20-50 on each of our kids. I spend about £20-40 on dh

Dh decides how much to spend on his side of the family but it's fairly similar, perhaps a little more on neice & nephew but he has less people to buy for.

£75 each on my parents (as they spend about £50 on each dd and me and dh), nothing on siblings as we all have kids and agreed to only spend on the children.

£15 each on 7 nieces and nephews

£7.50ish on nan and aunt who live alone. Token gifts really.

£10 for 3 bottles of wine from asda for 2 teachers and 1 rainbow leader!

£30 on a friends son as she buys both of my dds so feel I should spend a bit more

So all in about £250 for my side of the family - dh sorts his lot out!

This year we are doing things differently...

Siblings and I have decided that instead of spending £25ish on each person (4 siblings and 2 bro in laws) each adult will put in £10 for each other person and buy one gift so a £50 budget and the gift is from us all (iyswim) and we each save around £75 :-)

Parents and Ilaws around £25each, Grandparents £20each, Bil and Sil (DH side) £25 between them, Friends a token gift of nice wine or gingerbread house etc.

I'm glad to read all these amounts of money. I know longer feel mean about what I give!

RuckAndRoll · 09/10/2012 18:01

ok now I feel mean with what we give.

£15 for parents/siblings/siblings partners
£25ish for niece/god-daughter
£40ish for DH

A visit with lunch out and a few of the years best photos for display for the grandparents as they don't want or need anything and much prefer this.

In-laws we do secret Santa, each person spends £100, so DH and I spend £200 between us, but that effectively covers six adults.

Before we brought this in it was £100 each for MIL and FIL, then £50 each for SILs and BILs (x4). The £200 saving is fab, and highly recommended!

My DPs £50 each. DSis and BIL £25 each.
