Kindle Fire for 9yr DS ?

Is anyone else considering buying their DC a Kindle Fire for Christmas ?

My DS loves using my IPad, so much so I hardly ever get to go on it ! I have been looking to buy him a tablet PC and am now considering the Kindle Fire.

I have looked at the Kurio, but think it is aimed at younger kids and the Fire seems to do more and is actually cheaper than the Kurio and is also cheaper than the Nintendo 3DS which is another gadget He has expressed an interest in.

I'm a bit concerned that as he is used to the iPad, the Fire may be too basic.

I know the fire hasn't been released over here yet, but was wondering if anyone has any views ?

I was looking at reviews of the Google Nexus 7 - similar price to the Fire but seems to outperform the Fire. Haven't quite decided, DD is only 8, and it still seems a lot of money for an 8 year old.

I know what you mean about it being a lot of money for an 8 year old !

If I did buy a tablet he wouldn't be getting much else Grin

We are going away from Christmas to stay with relatives and as we are flying are restricted to the amount of presents we can take for DS. He normally gets Lego and games etc which are all too big and heavy to take on a plane. I was also thinking a tablet would keep him amused whilst we were away as he tends to get bored whilst staying with our relatives.

We have a Kurio and DD loves it so much that we are buying her sister one for xmas! It really is Fab. Mine are 10 and 7, and they don't seem to think it's babyish.... There's loads on there that they can use. x

We're planning on getting my dd10 and dd8 a kindle fire each for Xmas. Their birthdays are also on Xmas eve and 19th resp.

They keep using my iPad so this year, they can play their games on the kindle fire which my hubby says its good as it will suit their needs which is eally playing games as well as homework of course.

They also will be getting a camera each. No plastic toys this year but a few very nice electrical gadgets hopefully lasting thru their teenage yrs.

All this talk of Kindles, and not a single mention of anyone's DCs actually using them to read a book. What a shame.

Watching this thread with interest. I'm thinking of getting DS8 an ipod touch/ kindle fire/ nexus.Everyone seems to have a different opinion on which is best and the more reviews I read, the more confused i get. Can't decide which and also the ipad mini is due out but expect that will be out of my price range. DH says I'm mad.

if you buy them this at 8/9/10 then what will you fork out for them as teenagers?

I have pre ordered the kindle fire for DS 12. I got sick of never being able to read my kindle because he always had a book on the go. If he doesn't have my kindle it's DHs i pad. We thought the kindle fire would be ideal for him. It's being dispatched on October 25th.

BlameItOnThe.... I was thinking blackberry playbook as it looks good and price is good too but read a review (can't remember where but think on here) where someone said not many apps available and blackberry in trouble so may not be any more apps. Not sure if it's true but it scared me off.

I think I'm going to cancel my order for the Kindle Fire as I have just discovered it currently doesn't support BBC Iplayer or Youtube, and that would be 2 things my DS would want to be able to use.

Oh well.. back to the drawing board as to what to get DS for Christmas !

Def go with the Nexus over the Kindle fire. Much more flexible. You can't get to the android app store on the file, only the amazon one.

Agg pressed post too soon. Meant to say that you will be able to download the kindle app onto the nexus, and there's an iplayer app too.

Just wish the Nexus was a bit cheaper... Its just too much to justify spending on an 8 year old !

Db has the playbook and its awesome, you can use iplayer etc on there. I'd not heard that bb was in trouble, I'd be surprised tbh. We are getting one for all of us.
