Carcassonne is great, the basic game is fun, and there's loads of expansion packs, too.

Scrabble (the classic, not those modern rule change shenanigans obviously)

Articulate

UNO is brilliant

The Lord of the Rings game - you play it collaboratively as a team (the Fellowship) and have to share losses and burdens and rewards. Complicated the first time you play but fine after that. See how close you come to casting the Ring into Mount Doom.

Settlers of Catan - same feel as Carcasonne and expansion sets galore.

Not a board game but a card game - Monopoly Deal, absolutely excellent!

Articulate is great. Not tried the junior version, but I'd have thought a 10 year old could manage the regular one. I have always loved pictionary too.

You can pick up loads of good board games in charity shops - lots of them seem to have been played once and then discraded - or even unopened(check pieces before paying though Xmas Grin) - scroogeemoticon.

Articulate is brilliant
Also, pictionary, cranium, scotland yard, cluedo

Would go with adult versions of all of the above

I second Dixit, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne and others mentioned, but if you're on a budget you can't beat a pack of cards and book of card games.

We've bought Dixit for DS1 this year

I found this website yesterday - amazing range of games. I could spend a fortune - and many of them cheaper than Amazon.

Another thought - there's a company called cheapass games that do some really good but cheap games. They're cheap because they're very basic looking, but are very playable. You can download a game called Kill Doctor Lucky which is very good (like a backwards Cluedo where you have to kill the doctor with different weapons).

Cluedo and Pictionary are both favourites in this house

all great suggestions. I know my mum used to have Pictionary many yrs ago, must get her to look in loft. DD would love that.

Logo game is in Tesco reduced to £15 at the moment, also same price in Argos, usually £32. The great British board game was also on offer but it might have gone back up to full price now.

I have bought both as Christmas presents and they had great reviews.
