Ideas on how to make baby's first Christmas special

I have always loved Christmas but my dp is a complete scrouge who doesn't seen to enjoy any part of it and thinks its just a way to waste money. Our DD will be 5 months this Christmas, can anyone think of ways I can make it special for us as a new family? What should we do on the day? What presents for DD and DP? Any ideas will be appreciated

My DS was 4 mths at his first Christmas, and to be honest we didn't do anything special. He had a present from us but we didn't do a stocking, having spent so much on baby stuff already that year. They get so much from family and friends anyway.

What he did like was having his regular feeds and sleeps, and lots of attention. In the run up to Christmas, he enjoyed seeing all the bright lights and colourful window displays of the shops, particularly if there were moving figures. You could take DD around garden centres looking at the displays, some are quite extensive.

You could buy a 'Baby's first Christmas decoration for the tree. You could fill a little stocking with practical things she will need, such as feeding spoons, baby toothbrush, new dummy, baby bubble bath, socks, bib, small toy, teething toy. (It would never have occurred to me to do this when DS was small) Have sparkly, colourful decorations.

For presents, look for things that have multi sensory features (colours, noises, textures) and attached mirrors, teethers, flaps to lift and so on. Toys that attach to car seat and pushchair are useful for a long time and also less likely to get lost. It would be nice to wrap a little present from DD to DP, doesn't need to be expensive. I think your DP might come round now there is DD.

What you do on the day is entirely up to you, if it's just the three of you, have a nice cosy relaxed day together. You don't even have to have the traditional meal, have whatever you fancy that doesn't need lots of work.

Witches, there is plenty of time for Christmas to become special for you as a family assuming you don't get rid of your Scrooge-like DP before then

New babies don't need anything more than a Christmas tree and pretty lights to look at. Have whatever you want for dinner and do whatever you want on the day.

In years to come and when your DD becomes more aware there are plenty of little things you can do; see the Elf on the Shelf thread - it's years before it would mean anything to her.

My ds was 5mo his first christmas, me and dp are fully paid members of the christmas nuts society.

He had a velour santa suit which being as cheesy as we are we photographed him in for gps christmas cards :) -- I still do this every year, he's 4 now and dds 3 so they're out of the velour stuff so its a christmas tree and mrs clause type fairy dress costumes this year, told you I was mental--

and a my 1st christmas t-shirt/bib. I brought him a special christmas dinner set that we use every year, and we got the same for dd her 1st christmas. Got the special baulball.

Agree with pp re stocking ideas.

He loved all the lights so we visited garden centres and the switch on in town, which we still do now.

I still have my christmas card from ds first christmas it a forever friends one, mummys 1st christmas. Ok its lame and soppy but I love it --i got dp and ds matching ones--

As long as everything is OK, we'll have a 5 week old with us come Christmas! As I have a 3.5 year old it will all be about making his Christmas special, rather than the babies who won't know what day it is and will still probably give me zero sleep and lots of exploding nappies!

I've bought some GAP babygrows (3-6 months) and a Very Hungry Caterpillar toy for the baby, and will probably do the Baby's First Christmas ornament thingy though.

Peaz I had a 4 wk old on ds 2nd christmas and did similar irc we 'gave her' her 'swing' as her present I wanted one as ds bouncy chair was very boyish and though why not keep it a few weeks and then she has a present as such (bargain on ebay it was :))

Ds did inform me christmas eve!! Dd should buy him a present. So we quickly re-labelled one lol
