I want to buy my daughter a new Nintendo DS for Christmas as she says her original one - she bought it herself - is "getting a bit ropey" (she has had it for years). She has had a rough year (health problems) and has been so good about it all that I really want to get her whatever is the best one out there but also want not to bankrupt myself. I know nothing about Nintendos so please can someone tell me which one is a good buy - there seems to be several options.

You can get very reasonably priced DSLite and DSi consoles online - I would go for one of those. I wouldn't go for a 3DS because they are very expensive and hurt your eyes, plus the fact that to use the 3D part, you need games specifically for it.

Agree not the 3d one. My daughter loves the dsi as it has a camera which she thinks is fab and you can do all sorts to the pics you take!!
Have a look on Amazon

Thank you so much for your help. I will have a look now. Do not think she would want the 3D one. It has been a hard year for us as a family as I have mentioned in another post and I just want to treat my children and DH as much as I can as we have all pulled together and helped each other through. Last Christmas was s**t so want this one to be happy.

Just wondering what the difference is between the DSi and DSLite.

We have a DSlite, DSi and DSi XL, and I would like the DSi best. Not keen on the 3D when we tried it.

The 3D ones have been reduced in price to £150 but they do make eyes sore. According to Game, the 3D function can be turned off but you're better off with a DSi, the camera function is great fun and it can record sound (just a few seconds) which can be altered so gives hours of fun.

Thank you Lynette. Off to have a look on your link now. Trying to get everything organised early this year so if another disaster health wise I will at least have the pressies organised. Also, cannot face the last minute christmas rush. Hope all of you who have replied have a great christmas when it comes.

We bought DSis last year for our sons and they love them. The cameras are great - you can do all sorts of strange things with the pictures, the recording is also good, you can change the pitch and speed of the sounds which is hilarious, also make animations and send messages to other DSi users. They spend more time doing all that than playing any games on them!

ds1 just had a 3DS for his birthday.
No experience of any of the others but he thinks it is great.
The 3D had a sliding scale so you can graduate the level of it, from completely off to completely on - I got it for £110 from Tesco about a month ago.
You can play 2d or 3d games on it.
You can take 3d pictures.
It has a street pass thing so you can get stuff from other 3ds's.
I have no idea really - but he is pleased.

We've got the dsi and it's brilliant. You can take photos and change/morph them - hours of creative fun! As well as using the games obviously!

Just something to think about - when I bought the DDs Nintendo DSs, I took them out the box and charged them up before wrapping them, so they were ready to play straight away on Christmas Day Smile

Hope you all have a great Christmas, after your hard year.

Thanks to everyone for their help. Going shopping on Friday so hope to get a lot done and can then forget about it until nearer the time. Hate shopping during the Christmas rush so like to be well ahead. I have some John Lewis vouchers that I was given so may look there and use them up and save on the cash.

Isla - I bought DS's DSi from John Lewis last year - I got them to price match Sainsbury's who were selling it for £20 less. May be worth shopping around, see what you can get them to pricematch ( not online prices though ).

I know you kinda said not the 3DS but I saw somewhere - Game I think - doing a trade where you could get the 3DS for £50 up, you might want to talk to them anyway, they might do similar on the DSi if you ask.
