Christmas ideas for my nearly 1 yo DD

My daughter will be 1 on 14 Jan 2012 and a few family members are asking me for some ideas for Christmas and birthday presents. She is our first child and we don't have a lot of friends with other children a similar age so don't know what sorts of things to suggest apart from some stacking bricks! Does anyone know what sorts of things might be good at that age (I prefer wooden/traditional type things). Thanks!

I would suggest:
Wheely Bug
Stickle bricks
Shape sorter
Books
I think I've seen a thread on parenting or behaviour and development currently going

scuttlebug - more versatile than a wheelybug and under £20.
hammer toys
push/pull along things if you think she will be walking soon
ramp thing for balls to roll down pricey cheaper

Nursery ball (a vinyl ball approx 20cm diameter) good to roll between you and crawl after.

Baby Stella first doll, a cute fabric doll cleverly weighted so that when she is put down to sit she doesn't topple over. Accessory sets can be bought separately for when your DD is older, look on Amazon.

Board or fabric books.

Wooden jigsaws where the pieces fit into a tray and have pictures under each piece.

Bath toys, things that float, squirt, pour, fill and empty etc.

A buggy toy with attached activities.

Basically you want things that might be too old for her at first, but she can play with them as her skills allow and grow into them.

DS2 will be 1 on 22 Jan - we already have a lot of toys from DS1 so I am making him a discovery basket which will contain interesting things he has never had before, like a giant pine cone, CD, interesting printed ribbons, ball with sparkly ribbon inside etc (just keeping an eye out whenever I get chance for things to include). Also going to make up a fabric bag with different textured and printed fabric scraps so he can feel them, look through them, roll in them etc.

All the ideas above sound great too and are things our DS1 started to like between 1-2.

The Fisher Price train with all the little blocks in it is great.

As she's got a January birthday I would definitely have a think about things she could grow into. Lots of good ideas on here already but thinking ahead to the 18 month stage -

Wooden train set (Brio do starter ones for 18 month plus)
Pop up tunnel/tent
Orchard two-piece jigsaws
ELC happyland range
Wooden walker (though I hate to say it the annoying plastic Vtech walker is more sturdy and easier to manoeuvre)
Wooden activity cube
Learn and groove table (it's not wooden or traditional but it was very popular here)
Musical toys
Lift the flap type board books

DS has a Jan birthday. When he was too little to get the idea of presents as such, we asked family for money towards buying something bigger, like a really nice farmyard set/play tunnel/sand pit. As he had just had lots of christmas stuff it seemed like a good idea.

Wooden bricks set - Hamleys have a lovely one
lift the flap books
ELC Happyland play sets
small pram which can also serve as a walker
stacking blocks - they seem a bit harder to find these days - my older girls loved them
shape sorters
inset puzzles which make animal noises when pieces are inserted
