I started about 10 years ago in my early 30s, but the first couple of years there wasn't too much going on and the hard work started about 2 years later.

I offered a legal/HR service and it transitioned from consultancy based offering into a tech platform.

I'd taken the business as far as I could, tech is not my area of expertise (or my interest in all honesty) and I couldn't take it to the next level.

I sold because I felt I had a responsibility to everyone who worked in the organisation to continue the success.

Obviously the money was also an incentive

Do you still work? A friend that did similar couldn't cope not working so went back to consultancy (and makes even more£££!).

A bit of both. I think I'd have been quite happy letting the consultancy side of things tick over but a series of personal circumstances meant I became more driven and at the same time clients were saying "what we really need is a system that allows us to do this", so I sought out that solution.

I had no expectation of the level of success it achieved

No I don't think I'll start another business, I'm continuing to do a bit of consultancy, but I'm only taking in stuff which is really interesting to me.

"My business" no longer exists as such, it's been subsumed by the purchasing company.

I do have some bittersweet moments and that's perhaps why I'm not keen on starting up something new, but I'm proud of what I achieved.

Did growing the business involve crazy hours? We have a friend who has done something similar in the tech sector - not sure it was quite as successful as yours, but I think it was sold for a 7 figure sum. He worked incredibly hard for a few years, and it's certainly put DH off attempting something similar.

Was there a stage where you had very few staff, and had to do everything (e.g. marketing, sales, HR, technical things etc.). My friend says that was a stage he really didn't enjoy, and while he is working now, he doesn't plan to start another company.
