Does it annoy you when people like me (slightly haggard mid 40s mother of 3) show you a picture of Keira Knightley or someone similar and say 'I want it to look like that' and you know that, in their heads, they are actually going to look exactly like that person, when clearly the reality is somewhat different?

I would say your scalp needs moisture. I assume you’ve treated the lice?
If it’s flaking I would go for as good as you can afford mousturising shampoo and conditioner.
Dandruff is yellow and has a smell.
Most people see a flaky scalp and go straight for the dandruff treatment but a lot of the time what you need is to replace the moisture.
Schwarzkopf BC range do a fab moisture kick shampoo. HTH

I'm allergic to ppd and I've been using Wella Color Fresh to perk up the colour once in a while . I'm getting quite grey now so I think I'm just ready to embrace that but the toner has left a brassy stain , despite it being black . Will anything shift it ?
I tried colour B4 years ago and it was a lot of faff and didn't really work.

@vegpatch it doesn’t annoy me but I do find it funny sometimes. I will always take the time to explain why something is not possible though and suggest alternatives. Although some people cannot be budged

I once worked with a hairdresser who’s standard reply to those pics was “is it her hair or her fave you want”

I’d never be so rude but would gently suggest suitable alternative options

Ooh great thread, what kind of style would you recommend for thinning hair? My hair is shoulder length but as I'm getting older it's not looking as good because of the lack of body.
Struggling to come to terms with the fact I may have to go much shorter. Any suggestions?

Why won't hairdressers cut hair if there are empty sacs but headlice have all been treated/removed? In my experience, the sacs are very hard to remove sometimes, especially from yourself!

Yay! I’m one of the going grey brigade on the other thread.

I have a lot of grey except for a dark patch at the back of my head that just won’t bloody go grey so I’m stuck between. I currently get my hair dyed to cover the grey, but am considering getting it dyed a nice ‘modern’ shade of grey. Hopefully the growth won’t be as noticeable.

Can I get the colour removed and then dyed grey on the same day?

@TheQueef I would say pictures. Take screenshots. Take a photo of anything you see that you like. Pay attention to whether it’s the colour or style that appeals to you. Don’t be afraid to show them loads.
I love when clients bring pictures. It give me a clear visual of what they like and from that I can usually help them work out what they want.

It’s the hairdressers job to interpret what you mean so do t stress about it and do t be shy about what you like and especially what you dislike

Failing that, ask them to advise you on what shape/style/colour would work best for you.
I always ask:
what do you like about your hair at the moment?
What do you dislike?
Can you style your hair properly?
How often do you tie it up?
Do/will you colour regularly?

Tell the truth and they’ll be able to help you. And always get a recommendation! Don’t just book the fanciest looking place

@ihopeyourcakeisshit honestly if it’s thinning above the shoulder lengths are better, a chin length bob if you really want to keep some length.

Anything above the shoulder will help it to look fuller though. On the shoulder or below makes it look worse if it’s thinning.

No fancy techniques for cutting fine/thinning hair, straight lines only, blunt cutting is your friend

I've recently gone from light blonde highlights to having it all toned down with a semi permanent, dark blonde mixed with a little gold. At first it looked lovely but four weeks on its really faded to a dirty blonde. I've bought the colour protect shampo & conditioner as recommended by my hair dresser. But every time I wash it, it fades to a dirty blonde. Do you think I could use a nice n easy dark blonde hair home dye or just grow this out? The blonde was too high maintence (every 8 weeks) but this colour's fading fast after 4 weeks!

It’s hard to be certain that they are empty sacs. Sometimes they are eggs and blow drying would hatch them and cause the feckers to spread.

If by any chance you missed one it can live in salon equipment just about long enough to get to another head and also the risk of catching them ourselves. It’s unfair to the client but it’s just not worth the risk.

I have very fine hair, I want to grow it as long as possible. It's easier for me long.

What's the best style for me? I'd prefer to let it dry naturally.

I have always wanted layers, but every hairdresser has always talked me out of it so there must be a reason why.

Are there really products that help with fine hair?

Unfortunately I have to wash it every day.

I love my natural colour (apparently it's a great colour for going grey!) but would consider colouring it if this helped it appear thicker/fuller

@s1naidsucks god that’s annoying isn’t it? Yes you can do colour removal and re colour on the same day.
Be warned though most of the time colour removal results in an orange shade so you might not get your grey on the first attempt.
It depends on the skill(and bravery) of your stylist

@Margot33 I’d be interested to see a picture. The first time you colour over blonde hilites, it will generally fade pretty fast. The colour possibly needed to be a shade darker.
I would have it done professionally once more and show them how dark you’re happy to go and then take it over yourself if you want to,
If you decide to take it on now then use a colour that has some warmth in it, gold, Auburn, chocolate something like that so it doesn’t turn green
