That's it really. Have been a shoplifter for approx 10 years, and have recently decided to stop.
I'm not proud of myself, am fully expecting to get flamed, but and am hoping getting this out there will help with my resolve to stop permanently.

Did you even care how much trouble and upset you caused the staff that worked in the shops? Did you ever abuse the staff who worked in the shops?

Do you steal to order or to sell online/pub?

Are you involved in other criminal activities?

Do you have a drug habit?

Why did you choose shoplifting over legitimate employment ?

Retired?

You call the decision to stop thieving 'retirement'?

It's not as if shoplifting is a job.

Hmm

Ok, will try and answer as many as possible in one message.
I started off in the beginning taking just small items from supermarkets, Over the years it went to taking anything from small items to largeish sized electrical items, clothes, shoes, food, make up, jewellery, in fact almost anything can be lifted.

I didn't steal to order, as I would have been mortified if anyone knew what I was doing. I didn't sell stuff on either, I took things I wanted or I wanted to give as gifts.

Thank fully I never got caught.

To be completely honest I didn't acknowledge that my actions were affecting the staff directly, although I never stole from independents or small shops.

Yes, I know how to remove/deactivate security tags.

I stopped just over a month ago now as I didn't like the person I had become. I took a long hard look at my life and realised that what I was doing went against so many of my own values and those I had tried to instill in my chidren.

I don't have a drug habit, neither am I in any kind of financial difficulty. I was totally able to afford the things I took, which makes it worse to think about.

Oh, and I didn't choose shoplifting over employment, I work part time.
I am not involved in any other criminal activity, but I have been in the past.

Did the shops you nicked from do a whip-round and write you a card for your retirement?

Did you get a high from doing it? Or any sort of addictive feeling?

Report
WorkingGirlJem · 04/01/2019 16:28

I have never abused any staff members. I am the least volatile person ever. I am always well dressed and polite and look like any other member of the public minding their own business when I was out in the shops.
No situation ever arose when I would need to be in confrontation with anyone.

I find it hard to believe you never got caught tbh.

Report
WorkingGirlJem · 04/01/2019 16:31

I honestly don't know the exact reason why I did it. However yes, at times it did feel like an addiction.
There were highs too, totting up the value of the items when I got home. But it was short lived as within a short space of time I would feel disgusted with myself.

Did you discriminate or did you steal from independent retailers as well as chain stores?

WorkingGirlJem · 04/01/2019 16:33

I cannot believe I never got caught either, and that thought now keeps me awake at night - thinking about what could have been.

Sorry already answered mine.
Only I was with an independent retailer who is a friend of mine and the fact someone had stolen from her shop meant her food budget that week was £40 down, she was devastated.
