Bigfoot A mixture of a search engine and web directory. Carries lots of sites in different categories - travel, entertainment sport etc. The real attraction, however, is its claim to help you track down long-lost friends. We gave it a go and some UK addresses did come up, but not the one we were after. Let us know if it works for you.

Encyclopaedia Britannica The leather bound books go live on the net. This site hosts the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica (44,000,000 words, 32 volumes) and it's free.? It also has access to over 70 other sources of information and reviews 125,000 + websites. Worryingly addictive, it should make school project info gathering a doddle. UK version arriving this summer.

Hints and Things Run as a hobby this site aims to share knowledge and pass on the pearls of wisdom that used to be passed from generation to generation but aren't anymore. Helpfully set out - you click on different rooms in the house for different areas of advice eg visit the office for help with finance or computers, or the kitchen for recipes or help converting weights to metric. The nursery has an assortment of stuff - rhymes to help your child learn, suggested ways to entertain children and a method of removing head lice. It's easy to use and has a cosy friendly feel to it - worth dipping into.
Multi map A detailed street map of Britain, which you can search by town, village, postcode, or if in London, street name. The ideal site if you don't have the full complement of A-Z guides to hand.
PhoneNetUk An online directory enquiries, which beats the old 192 hands down if you've easy access to the net. You get better advice on finding the number you want, as many attempts as you like at defining your terms and most of the postal address as well. It's also a lot faster than all that 'the number you require is' nonsense. It feels a bit spooky, though, to see all your details up there on screen.
Royal Mail A handy way of tracking down a postcode or finding an address from a known postcode. We loved it. You can even print your own postage!
Word Pool Set up by an ex maths teacher and chidren's author, Word Pool offers book reviews from children, a section dedicated to reluctant readers and a whole zone dealing with numeracy and how to help children understand numbers. Still in its early days, the site is worth a visit if you have primary school age children.
