Holy Trinity School Bonfire and Fireworks, Woking, Surrey

We like the fact that this event offers toddler-friendly, gentle fireworks before the main display. There will also be a huge bonfire, mulled wine and a winter BBQ. 8 November

South Milford Bonfire and Fireworks, Leeds

Winner of the North's best fireworks five years in a row, this tiny hamlet on the outskirts of Leeds is renowned for its bonfire and fireworks display. The cherry on the cake (or shall we say 'Guy Fawkes on the bonfire') is that all proceeds are donated to local charities. 2 November

Edenbridge Bonfire and Fireworks, Kent

This huge bonfire in Kent is best known for its effigy of 'Celebrity Guys': giant wooden models of recently disgraced or love-to-hate celebrities (past models have included Mario Balotelli and Anne Robinson). A tad controversial, but at least a bit of a twist on tradition, we're eager to find out who they'll be throwing on the bonfire this year. 2 November

Bonfire on the beach

Fire Festival, Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, London

Not just one night of celebrations, the Art Council's Fire Festival has more than two weeks' worth of literary events ahead as well as a bonfire and fireworks display on 1 November. 17 October - 3 November

Carbis Bay Beach Bonfire and Fireworks, St. Ives, Cornwall

With all the usual trimmings of a bonfire and fireworks events, this sea-side celebration has the added atmospheric bonus of being on the beach. There's also a free shuttle bus service from the town. 3 November

Blists Hill Victorian Town Fireworks Display, Shropshire

Combine a celebration of Guy Fawkes night and fireworks with a tour of Blists Hill Victorian Town. The streets will be authentically lit with gaslight, and the town's shops and cottages will be open for visitors to explore. You can also chat to 'residents' in Victorian dress about life in the 1800s. 2 November

Abingdon Fireworks, Oxfordshire

A great way to combine Guy Fawkes and Halloween celebrations, not only will there be fireworks, a bonfire AND a laser show in Culham's Park this year, but there will also be a Halloween Scare Zone in the woods and a magic show for kids. 2 November

Carlisle Fire Show, Cumbria Fireworks

Incorporating theatre and history into its celebrations, Carlisle Fire Show in Bitts Park will include a dramatic performance of 'The Carlisle Story', and admission is free. 2 November

Littlehampton Bonfire Night and Fireworks, West Sussex

With a bonfire display on the seafront, a carnival procession, music, and events throughout the day (if you can't face going out into the cold after dark), the Littlehampton Bonfire Night sounds perfect for families. 26 October

Lord Mayor's Fireworks Display, London

Ending a week of fireworks across the country, this promises to be a magnificent display over the river in the centre of London. The best viewing spots will be on the river side near Waterloo, Blackfriars, Victoria Embankment or the Southbank. 9 November
