The Rosendale, Dulwich London
The Rosendale combines family-friendly with adult-friendly, providing the full works facilities-wise for keeping children happy and entertained (including a kids' menu, but also the option to downsize any of the a la carte options) whilst maintaining an elegant and charming atmosphere.
Gusto, Didsbury Manchester
With a heated terrace, leather booths and iPod Touches for the kids to play with, Gusto is grown-up and sophisticated, but family-friendly too.
Enjoy a pizza and hand-made cakes whilst looking out to sea, and then take a stroll around the pier. Lunch at The Clockhouse can make for a perfect family day out: Southwold Pier is not as tacky and garish as you'd expect, and some of the amusements are quite quirky.
Cini, Narborough Leicestershire
On 'Cini Mini' days (12-2pm Monday to Saturday in school holidays) kids can create their own pizzas and pastas with the chef at Cini. On any other days, it's still a lovely, child-friendly place for a family meal out.
Slurp, Wimbledon London
At Slurp, kids can see their Asian cuisine prepared in the open kitchen, and will love the novelty of the bento box option. Lunch deals make it an affordable family choice, too.
The Garden Café, Botanic Garden Cambridge
In the lovely setting of the Botanic Gardens, The Garden Café has predominantly natural, Fairtrade and locally-sourced food and all the facilities you'll need for bringing your children along for the meal out. Mathews Library also provides books for children of all ages.
Green Cuisine, Worthing West Sussex
An ethical eaterie, Green Cuisine caters for no dairy, no nut, no wheat, low GI and low fat diets, and is eco-friendly to the core: even their sugar cane toilet paper is ethical. Yet it's a fun and lively place to bring the children too, and it plays host to a variety of community events as well as kids' cookery classes.
Coriander, The Mexican Restaurant Bournemouth
Colouring-in placemats and a healthy kids menu as well as arts and crafts activities during school holidays make Coriander family-friendly. They serve high-quality Mexican food with vegan, vegetarian and coeliac options too.
Purnell's Bistro Birmingham
Just around the corner from Glynn Purnell's Michelin-starred restaurant is his wallet- and child-friendly version, Purnell's Bistro. Affordable yet glamourous and still serving high-spec cuisine, the Bistro will allow you to treat your children to a special meal out where they can pick kiddy portions from the same menu as you.
The Pandora Inn, Falmouth Cornwall
This ancient thatched pub has a private beach and jetty for crabbing, so it's perfect as part of a family day out. It is also an authentically Cornish experience: the bulk of the ingredients come from local fishermen and farmers.
