Yes interesting, but I was wondering if he's fallen into the same trap as the govenment which is equating sugar with bad health and chemical sweeteners with good health. Bit of a mistake IMO.

Theknacktoflying · 03/09/2015 20:51

Had a squizz at his book today - can't say that I would cook anything from it.

I think the govt initiative is more about reducing rather than substituting sugar. Full fat and minimally processed food is better than low fat, processed food - usually the fat is the taste - once it is removed sugar (and substitutes) need to be added to make it taste palatable.

lastqueenofscotland · 03/09/2015 21:05

Ok this is already more hard hitting that I thought it might.

watching now. oh god that poor little boy.

Ubik1 · 03/09/2015 21:07

Friend had to take her child to have some teeth pulled at the local children's hospital. She was mortified. But what was worse was the many, many other children who were having all their teeth pulled.

firefly78 · 03/09/2015 21:08

do people really give 6 year old fizzy drinks???!!!

Ubik1 · 03/09/2015 21:09

My six year old has a fizzy drink as a treat perhaps once a month Confused

Ubik1 · 03/09/2015 21:10

Omg Shock

firefly78 · 03/09/2015 21:10

yeh that sounds ok. im guessing these kids must be having them every day?

redpriestandmozart · 03/09/2015 21:10

When did he become orange?

lastqueenofscotland · 03/09/2015 21:12

they said sugary drinks not fizzy that could be Ribena/orange juice etc

OP posts:
firefly78 · 03/09/2015 21:13

did they? i was sure they said fizzy. i generally only give my kids water.

firefly78 · 03/09/2015 21:17

hes so smug isnt he

Ubik1 · 03/09/2015 21:19

He's been on a diet. Grin

Obviously able to pontificate about sugar now

lucjam2015 · 03/09/2015 21:20

JO is looking slimmer than usual in the prog. This is quite shocking stuff isn't it. Just so used to looking for kcal and fat content on packaging, need to start looking more at sugar. Not sure I really understand how to calculate it. Can someone explain it for me in a simple way?!

firefly78 · 03/09/2015 21:20

turned it off. dont need to see amputated feet.

plum100 · 03/09/2015 21:23

Serious amounts of hidden / free sugar? I thought we ate quite healthily... Obvs not!!!!

lastqueenofscotland · 03/09/2015 21:23

I'm terrible for drinking sugar. Virtually all my meals are healthy (cooked from scratch, no cook in sauces etc etc) but I had a bottle of peach iced tea for breakfast today.
Argh. Need to quit that.

OP posts:
firefly78 · 03/09/2015 21:25

they will go about fruit next and natural sugars. so depressing. what are you meant to eat? my kids eat fairly healthily i think. i dont give them sweets but other people do. they both like fruit. i run out of ideas!!

plum100 · 03/09/2015 21:25

I have two sugars in each tea , and might have 7 cups a day!!!!!

godsavethequeeeen · 03/09/2015 21:26

Peach Iced Tea could have been my downfall. I had to go cold turkey after a few weeks of the stuff one summer. Now it's a rare eating out treat.

Ubik1 · 03/09/2015 21:28

I think the key is to try to cook from scratch so you know what's in it.

As a ft working mother of three it's easier said than done!

Godsave I had to go cold turkey on caffeine and fizzy drinks, I used to live off strong coffee and coke. And really cut down, can't stomach coffee any more have one can at most of coke a week.
I might need to add the iced tea!

Carbs = sugar

So basically, as well as 'table' sugar (or honey/syrup/agave syrup/maple syrup, etc) fruit is sugar. That's probably obvious - but carbs are also sugar, so are potatoes, pasta, rice, flour, bread - all sources of glucose for the body.

So when they talk about cutting down on sugar, it's not just the obvious stuff, but also other carbs.

firefly78 · 03/09/2015 21:29

exactly BIWI its a fucking nightmare
