Good afternoon, everyone.

Many of you will have seen the thread started by Theremustbesomething suggesting that Mumsnet consider campaigning for the government to change its policy towards asylum seekers fleeing from war zones.

Justine posted this morning to say that "we think that the best way forward is to poll all users to gauge support for this. While it's clear from this thread that many feel extremely passionately about the need to do more, we've had a look at other threads on the subject, and there are a range of views. As a rule we don't campaign for political change unless we're clear that it's something that a substantial majority of Mumsnetters support, so we'd need to be sure of that before committing to an 'official' campaign."

We've now set up the poll; you can fill it in here. We'd be grateful if as many of you as possible could take it, to let us know your views. We'll make sure this thread is prominently displayed across the site.

Thanks very much,
MNHQ

Done. Will also share the link

PetraDelphiki · 03/09/2015 17:51

Done - although I wonder if it's a bit self selecting? Only people who care will fill it in?

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/09/2015 17:54

Only people who care will fill it in? That's the essence of politics. People who care, either way, will be vocal.

atticusclaw2 · 03/09/2015 17:56

TBH this isn't a parenting issues and this is a parenting forum (albeit that we discuss a whole raft of issues). I would be concerned if I thought MN was going to be taking a political stance on all sorts of issues in my name (as a user). Leaving aside my feelings about the refugee situation, IMO this is inappropriate.

notinacton · 03/09/2015 17:57

done!

MsMarthaMay · 03/09/2015 17:58

This is a site for parents but it covers many different topics, politics being one of them.

GinandJag · 03/09/2015 17:59

It's too simplistic.

HannaClotta · 03/09/2015 17:59

Then you can vote accordingly Atticus and have your say. That's the point of the poll.

insancerre · 03/09/2015 17:59

I don't see it as being inappropriate

ThoseAwfulCurtains · 03/09/2015 18:01

I imagine a fair few are parents.
Or were Sad

YokoUhOh · 03/09/2015 18:01

It's a parenting issue because while my nearly 3-year-old boy is tucked up in bed, someone else's is drowning trying to flee a civil war and I feel powerless to do anything about it.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 03/09/2015 18:02

Not a parenting issue? Of course it is. Have you seen the pictures of the Syrian families fleeing their homes?

Gruach · 03/09/2015 18:02

Any issue that touches on the sort of world we want children to grow up into is a parenting issue surely atticus?

Though as far as I can see MN is far more than "just" a parenting forum.

Archfarchnad · 03/09/2015 18:03

Done.

This is absolutely a parenting issue - many of the refugees acutely threatened right now are families with young children.

NO, that's not what I'm saying hanna. Whether I am in favour of refugees being allowed to enter doesn't change the fact that it is politicising the site and those who use it.

So do we then have a vote on how we collectively feel about exiting the EU and MN campaigns on that? An independent Scotland?

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/09/2015 18:05

TBH this isn't a parenting issues and this is a parenting forum I think the visceral response to the picture of little Aylan on that beach was partly because a lot of us are parents.

I also think that MN is more than a parenting forum. It is a place where very intelligent debate, mostly by women, happens. That is rare. How many million women use this site? Where else can you ask and get this many people to think about responding?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/09/2015 18:07

If we remove posts that are not about parenting from this site then the vast majority of it would be empty. This isn't a site about parenting, this is a site for parents. And what is happening at the moment is touching many parents as well as others.

And for those who have lost their children through this crisis, this very much is a parenting thing.
