Corn beef hash?

Moonrocks6 · 25/08/2016 16:36

Just spoken to DH on the phone and he has requested corn beef hash for tea.
I have no idea where this odd request has come from and it is not something that I have ever made.

Does anyone have a good recipe that they could share.

I just make mashed potato, add a tin of corned beef (cubed), some cooked carrots and sliced Spring onions. Mash it all together, not too much or it'll be mush, grated cheese on the top and stick it in the oven.

Apparently American corned beef hash is very different though.

Delia's recipe here

Food of the gods - I want it for my tea now!

It's corned beef hash. Corned beef, potatoes, onions. All cooked in stock until potatoes start breaking up is the basic. However, there's as many recipes as people.

Moonrocks6 · 25/08/2016 16:44

Ah corned not corn Blush
I did google it but got lots of recipes that included steak which I didn't think was right. I've never had it.
Don't know where he's got this idea from.
Thanks purple that seems relatively simple.

Eh??
Corned beef hash is potato hash but with corned beef instead of diced beef
No idea what you lot are making Confused

PurpleDaisies · 25/08/2016 16:48

I hope it's the right version!
It's one of our favourite stodge comfort foods, along with cheese and potato pie (effective cheesy mash with more cheese on top baked and served with beans).

Tiggeryoubastard · 25/08/2016 16:56

In Lancashire, potato hash is made with mince, not fixed beef. And just like I've described the (very basic) corned beef hash. Not a clue what your post is about, NoCapes.

Tiggeryoubastard · 25/08/2016 16:56

Fixed beef = diced beef.

NoCapes · 25/08/2016 16:58

Never had potato hash made with mince, never even heard of it made with mince
And not sure whether your last sentence was as rude as it sounded?

OP you may need to clarify with your DH what he means, there are clearly a lot of variations of corned beef hash

Moonrocks6 · 25/08/2016 17:05

I think I'd better. Sounds like a bit of a minefield.

To me corned beef hash is potato, onion and carrot all cooked in stock like a stew with the corned beef added near the end so it doesn't completely disintegrate.

Moonrocks6 · 25/08/2016 17:16

Have checked. He def meens the corned beef from a tin.

NoCapes · 25/08/2016 17:18

Moon I think we all mean corned beef from a tin ... Don't we??

frik yes that's what corned beef hash is to me too

Really craving this now

Tiggeryoubastard · 25/08/2016 17:19

NoCapes sorry - it wasn't meant rudely, it does look that way, doesn't it. I just worded it badly. The last sentence meant I don't know what's your version of potato hash therefore I don't know what your version of corned beef hash would be.

Tiggeryoubastard · 25/08/2016 17:22

Yep, Frik, that's mine. The potatoes need to be cut into slightly different sizes to the smallest just about disintegrate and thicken it up. I also put in garlic, Worcestershire sauce and anything else I fancy.

quitecrunchy · 25/08/2016 17:23

Mmm stovies

NoCapes · 25/08/2016 17:24

Ah ok Tigger no worries Smile
And our version is the same ha!

PurpleDaisies · 25/08/2016 17:25

It looks like Welsh corned beef hash is different!

NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown · 25/08/2016 17:26

I boil and mash potatos, then mash corned beef from a tin into it.
I then tend to pop it in an oven dish for a while after forking the top so it goes crispy and sometimes I put cheese and lea and perrins on there.
Usually served with a fried egg.

Tiggeryoubastard · 25/08/2016 17:27

NoCapes Grin
Now let's talk accompaniments;
Pickled red cabbage
Pickled beetroot
Pickled onions

frikadela01 · 25/08/2016 17:27

Proper fancy some now. In a giant Yorkshire pudding.
