Do any of you add other things to a jug of bisto?

I love gravy but my other half doesn't like bisto, he likes proper home made gravy with stock and peppercorns etc but I haven't got time to faff for evening meals I just want to add hot water to bisto lol. Is there anything I could add to give it a twist? Maybe Tom purée or Worcestershire sauce etc??

A little marmite and a dash of honey Grin

Crankycunt · 02/11/2015 19:34

I'm your dh, bisto is Gipping. But then I make the gravy so I can do it the way I want.

If it's a cba everything frozen needs gravy kind of meal then a pre made one from Marks will do.

But adding Worcestershire sauce will make it even saltier, tom puree I think would be sweet.

Highlove · 02/11/2015 20:22

Your DH is right. It's minging. You could probably do a big batch of proper gravy and freeze it for emergencies.

coffeeisnectar · 02/11/2015 20:24

LSD. It livens up Sunday lunch a treat!

thornrose · 02/11/2015 20:25

Oh god sorry but a jug of Bisto cannot be given a twist that will make it more palatable.

timelytess · 02/11/2015 20:25

I have never, ever made a jug of bisto. Ever.

thornrose · 02/11/2015 20:26

Grin that's the second time I've laughed out loud at a thread in the last 5 minutes!

thornrose · 02/11/2015 20:27

That was at Coffee's comment.

bimandbam · 02/11/2015 20:30

Sorry but bisto is vile.

Most supermarkets now do a pre-made gravy in jars or sachets. It's not too expensive and is a world away from bisto.

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 02/11/2015 20:32

Do you mean Bisto instant gravy granules? If so I'm not surprised your DH isn't happy. I can only imagine that adding random stuff to it will just make it taste worse/even more of MSG and unidentifiable gloop.

Why don't you just batch cook a load of gravy using chicken wings or beef/lamb bones and a cheap stewing cut then freeze it in small batches?

Boredofthinkingofnewnames · 02/11/2015 20:32

Bistro is utterly grim. Freeze real gravy or the paste ones aren't too bad for a can't be arsed evening.

earlyriser · 02/11/2015 20:35

I quite like bisto Smile , sometimes I add chilli sauce or a dash of wine which perks it up a bit.

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 02/11/2015 20:38

Or, at a push, buy those little Knorr jelly stockpot things, in the gravy version rather than the stock version, and thicken them with some proper Bisto gravy browning powder. That is much nicer than those disgusting granules.

purplewhale · 02/11/2015 21:11

I add oxo to it, it tastes fine

ginmakesitallok · 02/11/2015 21:15

I fry a chopped onion, add any juices from meat, an oxo beef cube, water and then thicken with original bistro, I. E. the powder not the granules. Might add a dash of mushroom ketchup.

00100001 · 02/11/2015 21:18

What's wrong with Bisto??

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 02/11/2015 21:22

purple do you mean you add OXO to Bisto browning powder or to Bisto gravy granules?

GreenRug · 02/11/2015 21:27

I actually did this for the first time recently. Always make my own gravy normally but couldn't as the meat was cooked in a way that didn't produce any juices. I added what little juice did come out of the meat, teaspoon of Dijon and some tarragon. It was surprisingly passable!

OccamsLadyshaveToo · 02/11/2015 21:29

I add marmite if we're having beef, or redcurrant jelly if we're having lamb.

sorry to be a mn bore but in our house if anyone complains about the convenience food i serve they get shown where the cooker is! (And our house is only me and a 13yo)

Love Bisto. Love it. Usually drink the rest of the jug if it doesn't get used up. Yum.

Red currant sauce for white meat and mustard for red

AnyoneButAndre · 02/11/2015 21:43

I add Bisto powder paste to my "real" gravy for thickening and flavour if I'm doing a roast, but I think it would taste pretty rank on its own. For a weekday supper where you don't have meat juices to start with I'd buy a ready-made jar - I use them sometimes with Toad in the Hole and they're perfectly acceptable.

Indecisivejo · 03/11/2015 07:26

Wow I'm amazed at the bisto abuse tbh. Thanks for all the "helpful" suggestions people.
