AIBU?

Fucking tinsel

I am quite ready to be told IABU!

DP and I have put up the xmas tree. Its great, nice size, red and gold with a few vintage style baubles along with some other nice red ones.

Now the problem.....I hate tinsel with a passion and we had some inherited hideous red with gold holly tinsel that is quite threadbare in places.

For some reason DP thinks it looks lovely and has put it on the tree. It looks awful. I gently suggested we put the gold beads on instead and used the tinsel round the mirror but no he won't hear anything against the fucking horrible stuff!

Just so I'm not drip feeding it wasn't from his family so no sentimental feelings towards it he just has really bad taste.

I will be having family over and I am really embarrassed by it as I cannot describe how hideous it is!

Wibu to wait till he is asleep, take it off, put the beads on and ignore the fallout or do I just suck it up and try not to look at it (it's in my living room so will spend a lot of time with it)

* I know first world problems and it is slightly tongue in cheek.

Threadbare tinsel is lovely, just like a threadbare teddy is the sign of a much-loved toy. YABU, leave the tinsel alone.

wannabestressfree · 05/12/2016 21:08

I love tinsel as it's reminds me of my childhood Christmas' so sorry a resounding yadbu.....
I also have a partner who is a control freak with the tree and it has to match. Hence why we live in seperate houses with our polar opposite trees... mine is an attack on the senses. Tacky shit all round at my gaff....

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 05/12/2016 21:09

People inherit tinsel now? Christmas is getting really weird.

Could a dreadful accident befall your handmedown tinsel? Possibly involving a cat?

SweetChickadee · 05/12/2016 21:09

I nixed the tinsel a few years ago. Hate it. YANBU

MattAffleck · 05/12/2016 21:09

YANBU surely DH won't notice it's gone from the tree?? Mine won't notice when I've put the tree up. I'll point it out to him and he'll say 'Oh yeah lovely' Xmas Hmm

ThoraGruntwhistle · 05/12/2016 21:09

Tell him you hate it and don't want to look at the tree whilst it's on there. He can get used to it without it, but you are really going off Christmas purely because of the ugly tinsel. Be really over the top about it. Basically act like a kid having a tantrum.
And then in January, bin it so you don't have the same problem next time.

Foxysoxy01 · 05/12/2016 21:10

Once he has gone to bed I will try and get a picture, then we will see what you think to the tinsel Grin

I haven't seen tinsel for years!

Foxysoxy01 · 05/12/2016 21:14

Unfortunately no cat! Neighbours don't have one so can't even borrow one!

I did admit that it wasn't to my taste but he said how nice he thought it was, but if you don't like it then ok in a pathetic tone with a wobbly bottom lip Wink

I think now I have said about it he would probably notice, damn it your right I should have kept my mouth shut and he probably wouldn't have noticed.

I feel you, OP.

My fiancé went through my boxes of Christmas decorations earlier and went 'Wot, no tinsel?'
He's planning on going and buying us some.
My kids are thrilled.
I am not.

PerspicaciaTick · 05/12/2016 21:17

Be really over the top about it. Basically act like a kid having a tantrum.
Always so attractive in a partner.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/12/2016 21:19

Picture first, comment after.

PlinkPlonkPlunk · 05/12/2016 21:24

Could you at least replace it with non-threadbare tinsel in a similar colour? And then accidentally donate it to a charity shop in the New Year?

Minstrelsareyum · 05/12/2016 21:25

I could have written this thread, op. My DH also used to insist on putting tinsel on our tastefully decorated tree EVERY year. It was a resounding NO. 'A tree is not a tree without tinsel!' he would say. He now shuts up for an easy life. Just a bit old fashioned (also preferred coloured bathroom suites Confused). However I have today bought two cheap bits from Asda as the DCs like to decorate and I have given up on ever having an 'interiors magazine style' Christmas tree. YANBU.

firsttimemum15 · 05/12/2016 21:25

I literally could have written this.

My other half the same. Sentimentally attached to hideous tinsel in past year i used to put it on mirror reluctantly. Then we changed the colour scheme for the tree.

This year coz i have a baby he was so surprised i put it up he didnt noticr it missing and ive actually binned it and used gold beads instead

ThoraGruntwhistle · 05/12/2016 21:25

My post was meant to be lighthearted, in accordance with the instructions of the OP. I don't really think she should throw a tantrum over it. Although I do think she should chuck it out.

firsttimemum15 · 05/12/2016 21:29

My other half didnt even notice id put the tree up

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 05/12/2016 21:30

My dd got the hump a few years ago when I nixed the tinsel. (I may have said it was a bit tacky. ☺️) My DM came for Christmas, sat looking at the tree and said "there's something missing" of course dd, bless her, said "mum says tinsel is common." little angel

Kel1234 · 05/12/2016 21:31

I hate a tree without tinsel personally

WeeM · 05/12/2016 21:33

I don't do tinsel either. I feel your pain

Foxysoxy01 · 05/12/2016 21:34

I'm very glad it's not just me that has to put up with the curse of hideous tinsel!
I am pretty sure if I started stamping my feet, throwing myself on the ground he would think I was having some sort of fit. Wink
