AIBU?

to think you don't text people when you'd expect them to be asleep?

I have terrible insomnia and have been awake since 3am Sad. I was actually just drifting back to sleep at 5am when I received a text from a friend!! So that's me woken up for the day. I can't think why you would do that?

Why leave your phone on noisy?

NickNacks · 29/09/2016 06:30

I think it's fine actually. I don't know anyone who doesn't put their phone on silent at night.

insancerre · 29/09/2016 06:30

I would do that

I don't keep my phone in my bedroom, who does that?

confusedandemployed · 29/09/2016 06:31

I'm often asleep by 9 and awake by 5am and this happens to me a lot. Put your phone on silent / vibrate only if it bothers you.

myownprivateidaho · 29/09/2016 06:32

Very annoying for you, but I think texting at whatever time is fine. You assume the other person will put their phone on silent at times when the noise could cause a problem.

HalloToJasonIsaacs · 29/09/2016 06:32

Lots of people keep their phone in their bedroom to use as an alarm clock. But they still put it on silent if they have any sense.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 29/09/2016 06:33

I use my phone as my alarm and I like to have it by my bed for security. I dont have a landline upstairs.

I think texting is ok at anytime. Put it on silent or do not disturb. I'm guessing she didn't expect an immediate answer.

Diamogs · 29/09/2016 06:34

Everyone I know puts their phone on silent or 'do not disturb' if they want to let certain calls through.

Newtoday · 29/09/2016 06:34

That's the point of texts! You send it knowing they are there, waiting til the person is ready to read it.

Phone calls - that's an immediate response! But texts - I send them any time that suits me knowing that the receiver can then read at a time that suits them.

Definitely have phone on silent and well away from your bedroom! Insomnia doesn't need any help! It's tough!

LyraMortalia · 29/09/2016 06:36

I'm awake because I got a pointless text at 6 this morning my phone is on because my dd is eight months pregnant and my mother is elderly and unwell. Clients texting me this early pisses me off its selfish and unnecessary and hardly anyone I know has their phone on silent at night, but my friends all have elderly parents/adult children/reasons to have their phone on.

thelonggame · 29/09/2016 06:36

I sometimes use my phone as an alarm too, but turn it to silent.
I don't think it's unreasonable to text someone at any time, they would expect the phone to be on silent, sorry

ChickenSalad · 29/09/2016 06:38

I think it's fine to text at any time but personally I don't want to look like a nutter texting in the early hours, or risk waking someone up in the way that happened with the OP.

MiniCooperLover · 29/09/2016 06:38

Your phone can be on silent but will still work as your alarm.

StrawberrytallCake · 29/09/2016 06:39

I always keep my phone on loud at night time, I once missed a call from my dm who needed an ambulance, because I'd put my phone on silent.

YANBU 5am is an unsociable time to text!

Optimist3 · 29/09/2016 06:39

Put the phone on silent. The alarm still works. It's fine for your friend to text

bibbitybobbityyhat · 29/09/2016 06:40

Right, so you can use your phone as an alarm while having it on silent? That I did not know. Might as well get up now! Yay, only 17 hours to bedtime. Will do my best not to kill myself whilst driving today.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 29/09/2016 06:41

I don't think it is unreasonable, as New says, texts aren't something that demands an immediate response, and most people won't have their phone on loud overnight.

If you have an iPhone there is a "do not disturb" mode where you can let calls from certain people come through, or if someone calls you twice in a couple of minutes then it comes through, and everything else is silenced.

IneedAdinosaurNickname · 29/09/2016 06:42

If you have a Samsung (possibly other phones too I don't know) you can use the 'do not disturb' function which automatically puts your phone on silent between times you set. But you can then set contacts as 'favourites' and calls from them will still ring/vibrate/whatever your phone is set to. So if you've got one person who might need to contact you in an emergency you can set them as a favourite. Saves unnecessary texts waking you up.

MoonlightMedicine · 29/09/2016 06:43

My phone is on do not disturb with my parents numbers an exception, so if they call me in an emergency their calls will ring out and wake me.

I'm guilty of texting very early because I do assume people either silence their texts or don't have their phone with them.

IneedAdinosaurNickname · 29/09/2016 06:43

Cross posted. Apparently iPhone has it too

MoonlightMedicine · 29/09/2016 06:43

Ineedadinosaur I cross posted with you. Yes, I have an iPhone and can do the same thing.

If you're tired, don't drive. Learn how to use your phone so it doesn't wake you up.

SplendidPanda · 29/09/2016 06:44

A lot of phones now you can set them up so if someone rings you twice in quick succession (like twice in 15 mins) even if your phone is on silent it will ring out the second time. Really useful feature.

bloodypatterdalebarking · 29/09/2016 06:46

If there is a risk of killing yourself through driving because you are tired then YABVVVVU to even consider getting in the car.

As for the texts, as everyone has said set up do not disturb or put on silent. Your friend apparently isn't the only selfish one
