"Perfect forest hideout for active families…"
This site is run by the Forestry Commission and is basically a clearing in the depths of the forest. Most tents are pitched in a big field with posher tent pitches along side the caravan sites at the top of the site.
A very small shop is reasonably stocked for emergency items - DH bought a lot of the beer brewed at the pub just down the road - and visited by a travelling fish & chip van and mobile newsagent. Facilities were clean and new.
The joy is the surrounding forest. We waded up the little beck near-by to find its source and, had the kids been older, we wouldn't have seen them from morn til night. We could hear the whoops of excitement echoing from the depths of the forest all around. The biking looks great - next time we'll bring our own - the site rentals looked a bit knackered.
There isn't a playground on site so its best suited to kids who can roam independently at some distance. Ours, at 3 & 5 , are still a bit young to get the best from this site but it'll be a fabulous trip once they are older.
Lots to see and do - Helmsley Castle, Riveaulx Abbey, North York Moors Railway to name but a few. Local Ryeburn ice-cream is divine. Try the Nutella flavour.Read moreLess
