"We have 2 boys (aged 2 and 4) who are"
31-Jul-2011
We have 2 boys (aged 2 and 4) who are extremely lively and love the outdoor life. Staying at Cuckoo Down Farm gave my husband and I the first properly enjoyable holiday with our children which we have had as parents. The farm is located at the end of a half mile track, and the 3 yurts are in a field behind the farmhouse/showerblock area, giving the children wonderful freedom in an entirely safe environment to play, explore and have the time of their lives. The 3 friendly sheepdogs on the farm proved great holiday pals for the boys and entertained them for hours.
Beccy and John who own the farm provide a unique holiday experience for a family - luxury camping with the comfort of beds and futons, toyboxes for the children which are put together with real care and thought and detailed information on tried and tested days out for families in the beautiful East Devon area.
The highlight of the holiday for my 4 year old was having a pony ride on the farm's Ebony. For my 2 year old, it was making a dam on the farm's stream. For my husband and I, it was the glorious uninterrupted stretches of peace to read and drink red wine by the fire, listening to the boys exploring and having fun.Read moreLess1 person found this review helpful.

"Having never been camping before, and liking my home comforts"
04-Jun-2011
Having never been camping before, and liking my home comforts a bit too much, we chose to stay in a yurt.
It far exceeded my expectations. It was lovely and cosy and had 3 great comfy beds (2 were sofa beds) together with quilts and pillows, a log burning stove for any cold evenings and rugs on the floor. Just a few steps away was your own kitchen area which was well equipped with crockery, cutlery, utensils, pans, tea towels, washing up liquid etc. There was also your own picnic table/bench, drinking water standpipe and compost toilet in it's own little shed with sink.
In total they have 3 yurts in the field (and an old style gypsy caravan that you can stay in instead), and they are very well spaced far apart from each other. There are hot showers available on the farm a short walk away from the yurts, together with use of a fridge, washing machine and tumble dryer.
There were a few useful items in their "honesty" shop, and more logs/kindling were available to purchase at a very reasonable rate. There was a local shop within walking distance that sold a wide range of things.
My daughter also had a pony ride. They have 3 well behaved very friendly dogs who my daughter just loved to play with. The owners were really friendly.
There is so much to do in this area of Devon, we stayed for 5 days, but next time we will go for longer as there is so much more to see, do and explore. All in all we had a fantastic, peaceful holiday. Very good value too.Read moreLess1 person found this review helpful.
