"We stayed here for a weekend and found the site"
04-Jun-2009
We stayed here for a weekend and found the site nice, very tidy and easy to navigate. It is predominantly a caravan site, with lots of static caravans and probably covers a couple of acres.
We went during a fairly dry spell last September, but a lot of the ground was still very soft from the heavy rain during the Summer. I suspect this would become a problem if the rain had been heavier.
The pitch was around £16 per night.
The camping area is nicely wooded and has a basic park with a climbing frame and slide. There is another park in Belhaven village, a right turn from the campsite main gate. There is also a mini market around 10 minutes from the campsite, which opens early at the weekend and stays open until around 9pm.
The shower building is clean and there is plenty of hot water and there are laundry facilities on site, which at £5 per wash and £5 for the tumble drier are on the pricey side. There is a ban on clothes lines on the site, so a bit mean and would put me off staying for more than a few nights.
The location of the site is fantastic, only 30 minutes from Edinburgh, the site is on the John Muir Trail, which runs all the way down to Berwick upon Tweed. There is no need to cross any roads to get to the large, sandy bay and lot of lovely walks on the doorstep.
I know nothing about birds, but even I was curious when we walked along the salt marsh, lots to see.
Dunbar is 5 minutes to drive and around 30 mins to walk and has a good selection of cafes and shops, with a great, working harbour and more sandy beaches.
There is a great swimming pool at Dunbar as well, which is cheap and free for younger children.
On the negative side, I found some of the staff a little less than helpful, but the small shop and reception is open until 8pm for lollies and Mars bars also featuring an ancient PC for internet access.Read moreLess1 person found this review helpful.
