"For our family's first proper holiday in Cornwall, we wanted…"
For our family's first proper holiday in Cornwall, we wanted to book a cottage by the sea. After many fruitless hours of searching, I finally found exactly what I was looking for in the shape of The Lookout in St Ives. Please note, this is the Lookout as rented by The Cottage Boutique and not the other Lookout in St Ives!
The Lookout is a 1 bedroom cottage literally on the harbour beach. It sleeps 2+2 (courtesy of a sofa bed in the sitting room). I wouldn't recommend it to those with children under 5 years of age because of the twisting staircase leading down to the kitchen which can be difficult to negotiate. My children are 7 and 10 and they declared it the "best cottage ever";; their imagination fired up by the idea of fisherman and pirates alike having stayed there!
Staying in the harbour means you are in a great central location to access the rest of St Ives. 10 minutes walk to Porthmeor beach for surfing, 20 minutes walk to Porthminster Beach for the best fish & chips in St Ives at the Porthminster Cafe! Fore Street is a mere 5 minute stroll away and you are surrounded by galleries and cafes from the second you leave the cottage.
It is rustic but incredibly charming. It isn't a Disney-fied version of rustic: this is the real deal. Stripped floorboards, low beamed ceilings, vintage prints, painted furniture are all here but the property shows its age which, personally, I find rather beautiful. There are window seats on each of the 3 storeys, offering incredible views around the harbour, Porthminster Beach, Carbis Bay and beyond. The cottage also has its own private terrace on the beach - a perfect spot for breakfast or for a glass of wine whilst you watch the children play on the beach in the evenings.
The kitchen comes equipped with everything you need for a smooth holiday with children including an all-important washer/dryer. The bathroom has a full size bath with an over-bath shower attachment. Whilst the cottage is small there is plenty of storage and space. Rental includes all linen and towels - of which there were copious amounts of the fluffy white variety.
The customer service was faultless. Prior to our arrival, we were given quick and detailed responses to our questions via email. During our stay, I had reason to contact Claire, the manager, on two separate occasions. Both times the issue was dealt with promptly and professionally. A post-departure cleaning service is also included in the price.
The company have a range of hampers which you can pre-book. We decided not to bother but were still greeted by a bottle of wine, chocolates and the all-important milk in the fridge!
Small but perfectly formed is the way in which I would describe this idyllic little cottage. It would be a gorgeously romantic hideaway for a rare weekend away without children but is equally perfect for a small family.Read moreLess
