The Courtyard at Bettystown is set in the grounds of Eastham House, which is a 10 minute walk from the lovely beach and shops. The local shops include chemist, convenience stores, takeaways (fish and chips, Chinese, Indian) and restaurants. Can thoroughly recommend Coast and Relish which overlook the beach. There is also Funtasia which is an amusement arcade with snooker/pool tables, roof top fun rides, and apparently a disco. Would be ok for a short visit but best avoided if you would rather spend your euro on other things. Further afield in nearby Drogheda (about 10-15 minute drive away) is a leisure centre which has bowling, amusement arcade on a smaller scale, snooker/pool and bingo. On the same site there is a swimming complex. Drogheda is more of a town than Bettystown and has good high street shops such as M&S and Monsoon as well as their own independent retailers. You can visit St Peters Catholic Church in the town and see the preserved head of Saint Oliver Plunkett (?).
Bettystown is a 5 minute drive from Laytown which has a railway station enabling easy access back to Dublin (about an hour) on the train. A family (2+3) return ticket to Dublin was 23 euros in 2008 which I think represents excellent value for money.
Nearby Newgrange is the site of the oldest monolithic passage tomb and is an excellent and informative day out for the whole family as there is also an exhibition.
The accommodation at The Courtyard comprises 12 three-bedroomed houses set in a Courtyard. The bedrooms are good sized and consist of a double bedroom with en suite, a twin room and a single room all with freestanding furniture and ample storage. The main area downstairs is open plan but very spacious. I personally feel the whole house could accommodate up to 7 comfortably. There are communal gardens which are beautifully kept and include a BBQ area and seating.
There is an onsite housekeeper and gardener who are both very helpful and accommodating.Read moreLess
