"Souks, snakes .. and villa Dar Azrou. May half term…"
Souks, snakes .. and villa Dar Azrou.
May half term last year I was in Marrakech. As I look out of my window in the UK, I have a hankering to be there once again.
If I close my eyes I can see my then 3 year old Son taking it all in. Standing in Place Jemaa El Fna in the centre of Marrakech, he was totally and utterly entranced. Medicine men sold their wares, ladies sold handmade baskets, mopeds whizzed by, we drank bucket loads of freshly squeezed orange juice from one of the squares vendours...;...;.. and my son met a snake charmer!
My son jumped. "What is that man saying"; was the question as the call to prayer came over the speakers. "Why is he banging so hard"; as we watched craftsmen making lamps in the Souks...; why, why, why.
The questions kept coming and we were delighted to answer them. It was all so new, so different. The Whys were interesting for all of us!
It was such an easy holiday. It was an adventure without having to stay in a youth hostel, travel hours on a bus.
We rented a fully staffed villa in Morocco for the same price as a villa in France. All our meals were fabulous and homemade - in our villa.
Each day the caretaker/cook asked what we fancied eating that night. She bought milkshakes for our son and chocolate pastries for him for breakfast. She made kids versions for him of some of the local more spicy dishes. Nothing was too much trouble and it was such a treat.
The villa came with a car so we would get up, have our breakfast and a swim in our own pool, head into Marrakech on our own, dodging the horse and carts, and mopeds. When we got back to the villa, my husband and I took it in turn to go and have some treatments at the spa around the corner. Our villa was totally enclosed so we felt very safe.
We returned waxing lyrical about our trip. We regaled friends about it over dinner.
Many families try out villa holidays and enjoy them. Some of the comments I have heard however are that you still have to do the cooking. Villa Dar Azrou fixed this problem.
Another thing I hear some parents mention is that they miss a certain level of adventure that holidays pre-kids can bring. We felt that this holiday gave us back a bit of this.. and our son absolutely loved it.
The greatest question we had was about medical facilities and cleanliness. I went to Marrakech about 12 years ago and it was quite a different place. Someone told us that the King of Morocco has made quite some efforts in tidying up the city...; in my opinion it has worked well. During the trip, my husband fell and cut his head. This off course had to happen in the middle of the night! The caretaker called a doctor for us who was there within the hour. He stitched my husbands' head expertly and was on his way. It was an inexpensive visit, professional and quick! What more can I say?
