"Almost like pre-children holidays!…"
Well, not quite, but there was so much to do on site, and the kids were so happily occupied that we got to spend loads of time lazing around reading books and drinking wine. Four gites is a good size as there were always at least 3 other families with similar age kids for ours to play with. It's all very informal and not very organised compared to some of the family-focused gite clusters you get - the owners don't organise film nights or bbqs or whatever, but we preferred that because we had privacy when we wanted it but also found it easy to talk to people and do thing together when we wanted to (like playing rounders and a fantastic treasure hunt organised by one of the other families). It's a bit of a drive to the more major attactions, like La Rochelle, Saintes or Cognac, but there are plenty of smaller attractive market towns within 30 minutes drive, like Aulnay and Melle. The owners are really helpful and kind. We'll be going back.Read moreLess

Great place for families. So much for the children on site, check out the website, we only had 2 excursions all week. The location is very quiet and rural and right up my street. The children just played all week, made some lovely friends and I got through 2 books. That tells you all you need to know.Read moreLess

"We are not Hotel people and as grandparents our main…"
We are not Hotel people and as grandparents our main thoughts are that the children should be happy and the parents are relaxed. Les Hiboux is a Farmhouse with such a wonderful adventure garden that the little ones were perfectly happy to stay around all day and were reluctant to get into the car. In fact sometimes our children went off and left my husband and I with the grandchildren to do just that. It hasn't any of the razz-a-me-tazz of Disneyland but with two boules pitches, trampolene, swing and slide, small football pitch, child's wooden garden house, swimming pool, games room with bar football, darts, and ping pong in another barn and plenty of bicycles to choose from we were never at a loss for something to do. Being in a hamlet we were not afraid of traffic.Read moreLess
