"Paradise for the under six (and their servants)…"
Northcote Road by the sea, with all that implies! Seriously thinking about block booking it for the next six years.

"Designed by a family for families - wish I'd found it earlier!…"
We went as guests of Martinhal for October half term for their first ever Family Surf Experience package. We had dd1 13, ds1 11 and dd2 6 plus grandma -almost 80 - and a dh who was in a work crisis. The resort is large and made up of a small hotel, large villas you can rent (or buy!) and lots of 2 and 3 bed townhouses perfect and I mean perfect for families - large washing machine, two fridges, and proper self catering facilities including fab coffee maker - comfy sofa, two bathrooms, lovely toiletries, two balconies - stairgate....Everything you'd want or need. The family movies need adding to but I'm assured that's coming and you can always rent a DVD player. The childcare is not included in the price, but there are packages and deals to be had and for us it was good that we could opt in and out - as two working parents we want to be able to spend time with the children -though we did struggle to get the 6 year old out of the kids club when she went. There was family footie at 4pm every day which my son loved, tennis courts, short tennis, three pools one indoor/ outdoor - all heated.
Every restaurant - there are three - is geared up for families from the lovely chap who is there to entertain your toddlers at breakfast with colouring (there were parents of 3 year olds sipping champagne over breakfast and looking relaxed - why did I not find this place earlier?).
By the main restaurant there was a sandpit and trampoline, by the Italian pizzeria a play area with small princess castle. Kids food was healthy and delicious and under 8's ate free when we were there. Even the dh - who emerged twice from work fog - was delighted with the mountain bikes - for rent at extra cost but great fun.
The highlight for us though was the family surf lessons. We were unlucky with the weather - the week before us it was 26 degrees every day - we didn't get that by any stretch- but in a wet suit and clutching a surf board it didn't matter even when it was raining. The instruction was friendly and personalised - they even got my 6 year old up and going -and our half day out an hour away in Portimao (sp?) was amazing if hard work!
Add in a spa, morning yoga, and great restaurants to go out to, plus super friendly staff and it really is a great family destination. You don't need a car, but we were glad to have one to go out and eat and explore - and driving is easy, it's only about 80-90 mins from Faro.
For a five star resort they have some amazing offers, especially if you're lucky enough to be able to go outside school holidays. I wish I had found this when we had toddlers and have been recommending it to anyone and everyone since I got back. Highly recommended (and there's a Mumsnet special offer of 100 Euros resort credit per room/ house/ stay if you book via our partner offers page)Read moreLess
