We stayed in Hotel Monte Bianco in August 2011 and booked it through Peak Retreats.
The hotel was completely refurbished in 2011 and the decor throughout the hotel was simple but pleasant. We had interconnecting rooms with 2 beds in each for our family of four. Most of the rooms have balconies.
The week we went was very good value as our children stayed free and we had full board and access to free children's clubs which you could use as much or as little as you liked. There were also adult activities - rambles, boules etc but we didn't opt for any of those.
The restaurant has a lovely terrace with panoramic mountain views. Most of the food was very good. There was a raclette evening and lots of choices for adults and children on the other nights. Wine was also included on tap! You could either go back at lunchtime for a hot meal or pack a picnic lunch up for a full day out.
Our children tried the children's clubs for a few sessions and the club seemed well run.
Most of the other families staying were french and the children's clubs are mainly conducted in french. Our children are quite outgoing and still enjoyed themselves despite the limited English spoken in the club.
The hotel had a swimming pool and jacuzzis, steam rooms etc. The spa area including jacuzzis etc needs to be booked and the lady running it was very particular over times. The hotel does not provide tea making facilities in the room and the hot drinks at the bar were disappointing. We would take a travel kettle another time. The other thing to note with the rooms is that they have ensuite shower rooms but no baths.
Saint Gervais is a fantastic base for a summer family holiday. There is a large very clean open air pool at the edge of the town. We had a great trip on the Tramway de Mont Blanc. You can get a cheap family pass for the local ski lifts and access to the town pool. The Thermal Spa in Le Fayet at the bottom of the hill is worth a visit. There are many more activities eg. ice skating, tennis courts etc close by.
It was our first summer alpine holiday and we had lovely weather and hardly encountered any crowds. We drove to Saint Gervais and it was a straightforward journey mainly on motorways.
